To ask if you don't like using an electric toothbrush

Do you often have earache?

Shamelessly posting for traffic. This might sound a bit random, but I really have to psych myself up to use my electric toothbrush as I don't like the sensation of it.

I'd never really thought a lot of it until today, when DH - who has earache at the moment - commented how horrid the sensation of cleaning his teeth was this morning, and that he now understood where I was coming from.

This set me thinking - I have had ear & sinus problems since childhood, and had a particularly awful experience having a crown fitted. I'm not scared of the dentist, but I don't like it as I hate the sensation of having anything done in my mouth. And I dislike the vibrations of an electric toothbrush.

So AIBU to ask if this a thing? or is it just me?

Thanks in advance Grin

I loathe them. I'm currently waiting for an appointment to instruct me in the best possible way to use a manual toothbrush - that's how much I loathe them.

Oddly, yes, I do frequently have ear pain. Hadn't thought there might be a connection.

No earach ebut I really don’t like them much. I now use a soft manual brush and am super careful and my hygienist is really pleased with them. She doesn’t know about the manual brush!

50/50 so far then Grin

DH said he couldn't previously understand why I hated them so much and now he gets it. I just wondered how widespread the electric toothbrush hate is.

I cannot stand electric toothbrushes, I feel as though my whole head is buzzing! I use a manual, dentist is aware of this and have never had a filling in my life so must be doing something right!

ladybee28 · 16/01/2019 18:09

For those that hate it, what does it feel like to you?

I can completely imagine some people must hate it, but I'm not one of them – I'm interested to hear what sensations you feel that the rest of us don't...

Is it pain, or the intensity of the buzz, or something else...?

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 16/01/2019 18:13

Ladyb for me it's the vibrations. It's a sort of chalk on a blackboard sensation on my teeth & gums, but it goes through my whole head.

I use one but it makes my nose really itchy for some reason

SoftBlocks · 16/01/2019 18:26

I don’t get earache but the vibration is horrible. I can just about put up with scale and polish twice a year at the dentist but will never get an electric toothbrush for everyday use.

Yeuch. That does sound awful!

NailsNeedDoing · 16/01/2019 18:27

I have electric toothbrush hate, it feels like there's a beehive in my brain. You are not alone!

HariboLecter · 16/01/2019 18:28

My teeth don't feel clean with a manual toothbrush (I'm sure user error) had an Oral-B but switched to Sonicare when it broke.
The Sonicare is much more pleasant to use, it doesn't feel as "buzzy" and has different strength settings so I leave it on the mildest.

I do suffer with sinus issues but that's from well before I started using an electric toothbrush.

Biologifemini · 16/01/2019 18:28

Hate my over priced sonicare
Doesn’t seem to get between teeth
It is like having a fairy polishing the surface
Probably good for guns though

sueelleker · 16/01/2019 19:20

I get on fine with mine that has a rotating head, but tried a sonic one once and loathed it.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 16/01/2019 19:25

I dislike my electric toothbrush, but when I was cleaning with a manual I wasn't doing a very good job. This was discovered during a rather embarrassing visit to a dental hygienist.
So I use an electric and sick up the discomfort. I also use interdental brushes and they freak me out, but it's better than being attacked by a dental pick every six months which is toe curlingly awful.

Mouikey · 16/01/2019 19:29

Not stealth boasting (promise) but I’m in my 40’s and never had a filling or used and electric toothbrush. I try them every so often but hate them I’ve never figured out why, but I have had ear problems in the past. I wouldn’t say I do anything special with my manual.

whatamidoingwithmylife · 16/01/2019 19:45

I HATE it. I feel like it's rattling me filling/crown and is just generally unpleasant.
I bought a 'better' one and it's just as horrible a feeling.
Sticking with manual for the foreseeable future.
