Anyone know about references for nhs jobs?

Hi all

Been a SAHM for a few years now and looking to get back into work. Seen loads of admin based jobs within the local hospital but I’m sure I read somewhere you need to have references for the past 3 years continuously? Anyone know if this is true? I don’t have any as I haven’t been working!! I don’t know anyone in a professional field either to use as a personal reference. Hoping this isn’t gonna be able to stop me gaining employment with them!

My sister recently just got an admin job for NHS and she hadn't worked for a year.

I'm not sure that she just applied though I think she had an internship first.

If I were you I would just go for it. You can always email the HR about advice on references

I think they probably hire a lot of people who have come back from SAHM

Does the job have a email/telephone contact you can ring and ask? Quite often NHS jobs do. Or ring the HR services at the Trust you want to work at. They will have has this query before. Good luck.

No you don’t have to have 3 years worth of references. I think the standard application form on nhsjobs even includes space for you to add a personal reference if you don’t have a recent or appropriate reference. In my experience it doesn’t matter that much who you put down as your references because HR will always ask for what they want anyway, and they are used to needing workarounds. Go for it!

Your references need to cover the last 3 years, whatever you have been doing. So if you've had 12 jobs in that time, you'll need to provide details of all of them. However as you have not been working it is most likely 🧒 will be asked for 2 character references, so someone who has known you for longer than three years and is not related to or living with you. They don't need to work in any particular role. They will only request references if you get the job so definitely apply!

Don't know how that random face got in there!

itbemay · 14/01/2019 15:03

log on to NHS Jobs, you can add in all your details etc and personal statement so if you see a job you just have to click apply and instead of you re-tying all the info it stores it for you.

You don't need continuous refs here in SE London just a reasonable explanation as to what you have been doing. SAHM is very reasonable.

All the best OP
