Ok so I have had tonsilitis this week and a bad chest . On antibiotics and doctors suggested I take the week off. I told work but said I'd see how I felt today and if I felt better return tomorrow . My throat is no longer sore but I've got a hacking cough and tight chest and feel unwell. AIBU to stay off till Monday? I havnt been back now since Xmas as this was my first week due back ? I feel really terrible being off sick!!

Why would you feel terrible being sick? Perhaps it’s just me but being off work legitimately sick never bothers me.

I would stay off the rest of the week and get a doctor’s note if needed. The GP did advise you after all.

It works out better on the sickness absence score if you have a period of absence rather than odd days.

Much better to take time to heal now and go back completely recovered than to force yourself back, struggle on at half strength and possibly end up having to take more time off in future. It also makes it easier for work to plan around you if they know you'll just be off until next Monday when you'll be back and fighting fit.

Chin up. You are not skiving. You are taking care of yourself.

I just do. I can't help it , I feel like I'm letting them down but I never take time off and I don't actually remember feeling unwell like this for a long time.

Take it off. If you were one of my minions I'd insist: Don't bring your infected cough into work! You'll only be working at half-mast anyway, and if anyone else goes off as a result you're bringing the side down, not up.

Fill up your lemsip/hot toddy, get thee to the couch, relax and stop being daft.

Er...you aren’t letting anybody down. Just remember that if they needed to get rid of you, for whatever reason, they would. So stop worrying as they won’t worry about you!

Honestly, it’s JUST a job!

Ooh I should have added that my current role is a secondment and I'm meant to interview for it permanently tomorrow! However if I'm not well there isn't a lot I can do they will have to push it back!
