New to this. Looking at sending DD 5 to after-school club ( independent as no provision at school ). Work for an agency so need as and when to pick up after school. Looked into childminders but no one interested / has room for as and when.
This provider a couple of miles away will pick up but asking for £30 to register. Just wondered if this is a standard thing
?

It's not uncommon. I paid a reg fee for nursery, which was non refundable if I didn't take up the place, otherwise it was offset against the final bill.

First breakfast club we used was v popular huge waiting list but a huge amount of time wasters, so they asked for a reg fee as confirmation you were taking up the place - they'd do this in the summer term and give people two weeks to pay. People who were serious would pay up, people who were hedging their bets wouldn't bother.

Current after school club didn't ask for anything in advance but they simply won't collect your child at all if you haven't paid in advance (they will work with you if you're having difficulty) - again, works very well and they have left kids at school before - you only have to hear about that once to make everyone pay!
