My 17 yo is doing A levels first year (sept birthday),
He’s asked me to buy him some new trainers they are wrecked, I Have no issue with providing for his wardrobe whilst being at school but here comes the aibu I bought him a brand new pair of converse for our summer holiday in July and ore for two weeks never seen since. I don’t want to buy him more shoes when he has perfectly durable shoes at hand
He doesn’t have a part time job, usually wears primark,H&M clothes (unlike our 14 year old) so I don’t mind paying for things but feel whilst he has a perfectly functioning pair of trainers I am not going to go out and buy him new for the sake of it, it if matters Ds1 has a disability so we have a small amount of disability benefit for him

He can't do school PE in Converse, nor are they great if it's wet (especially cold, winter wet). I'd get the trainers

elvis86 · 06/01/2019 22:59

July was 6 months ago. Is he supposed to only have one pair of shoes at a time?

Redcrayons · 06/01/2019 23:01

Converse aren't trainers though. And they're light weight summer shoes not suitable for January.

hammeringinmyhead · 06/01/2019 23:01

I don't wear Converse in winter. They're canvas!

Rachie1973 · 06/01/2019 23:02

Converse aren’t really very ‘winterproof’.

He needs hardy, thicker soled trainers for this weather.

Calvinsmam · 06/01/2019 23:04

His feet will freeze in converse!

defineme · 06/01/2019 23:04

Converse are plimsols not trainers and I certainly class them as summer shoes that don't stand up to rain or cold. How many pairs of shoes do you have? I have boots, wellies, trainers, converse, going out boots, 2 pairs work shoes, walking shoes, sandals. I dont think i am excessive

PookieDo · 06/01/2019 23:07

Yes I would as converse are not suitable for winter. I have a leather pair and they still aren’t very good.

Sports direct?

WontonSoupForTheSoul · 06/01/2019 23:09

Do you only have one pair of shoes? If not, you’re being hypocritical. Converse are not suitable for winter.

JurassicGirl · 06/01/2019 23:13

Converse don't count as trainers & are awful at this time of year!

elibee · 06/01/2019 23:18

As pp's have said converse are no use in cold wet weather.

Plus they're bad for your feet and joints if worn too much as they've no support or cushioning.

peachypetite · 06/01/2019 23:19

Is this your second thread on this subject?

AnotherPidgey · 06/01/2019 23:21

YABU. Converse are not trainers (and definitely unsuitable for sport unless you want an injury) They aren't great for winter with poor grip for wet/ mud and have little vent holes in the sides.

Trainers don't have to be expensive. Decathlon are great value (avaliable online if his feet aren't fussy about fit)

There will be cheap old season stock on sale all over the place now.

HJWT · 06/01/2019 23:32

So you get DLA for him and he's only allowed 1 pair of trainers? Summer shoes at that? My DD is two and has 4 pairs of shoes.

Do you only have 1 pair of shoes OP??

Bluelady · 06/01/2019 23:41

Thought on your other thread you'd decided to buy him more tomorrow?

AlexanderHamilton · 06/01/2019 23:47

Converse are casual summer shoes. My 17 year old 1st year of A levels daughter owns Vans (they fit her feet better), trainers, boots & formal heels. I consider those five the basics. Anything else comes out of her allowance.

newyearsameshit · 07/01/2019 22:47

Jeez

Potcallingkettle · 07/01/2019 22:58

Review his pocket money. Set an amount that you expect to cover clothes, trainers and some going out. Up to him to budget then and he can decide on priorities for the month. We go with £80 for similar age DC and leave them to budget. Latest purchase - heavily discounted trainers at TKMaxx for £16.99.
