DS and I have been invited to NYE house party tonight but it is:
-2.5 hours journey
-trains on strike and running reduced service
-£50 to get there and back - a lot for me.
-only know the host family, not the guests.

So I’m tempted to say no, stay in and get cosy but then I have a severe case of FOMO and my host friend is a good friend who I don’t like to let down. I’m single so feel I should mingle and make an effort. Agh but it’s a long way to a not nice part of London. I don’t know what to do!

I can’t make the decision. Please Mumsnetters make it for me!

Stay in! P

Mainchanger · 31/12/2018 09:29

I would stay in. What does FOMO stand for?

PositiveVibez · 31/12/2018 09:32

How old is your ds?

This is what it would hinge on for me.

If they are late teens and there are going to be similar aged kids there, I'd probably go.

If they are younger and would be bored after an hour, I'd stay at home and make it a bit special. Nice food, drinks etc.

PositiveVibez · 31/12/2018 09:33

main - fear of missing out

I am having the same dilemma but in my case my mates are only going to the pub ten mins cycle away. Just not sure I can be arsed!

Bluntness100 · 31/12/2018 09:38

Yes I can't be arsed tonight either.

However you will probably enjoy it when you're there...

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 31/12/2018 09:38

He’s 17 and wants to go because it’s London which represents coolness to him rather than our provincial backwater! They’re won’t be other kids but lots of nice food (my friend is a great cook) which is his motivating factor in life! (Along with WiFi)

10 mins away. You should go! That sounds like a breeze.

Normally I would say sod it, don't go, but as it's a good friend, and there will be nice food, and your teenager actually wants to spend NYE with you, I say man up and go. Wouldn't let the part of London put you off - you'll be indoors, and today is a mandatory work day for pretty much all police.

TeddybearBaby · 31/12/2018 09:49

Is it 2.5 hours each way?!

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 31/12/2018 14:07

Yep. Even more now cos we missed the train! But we’re on our way, on the train eavesdropping on a guy who’s telling his mate about his Xmas which descended into a turkey fight!
Thanks Mumsnetters for talking me through it. Happy New Year whatever you’re up to.

I think that sounds lovely!

TeddybearBaby · 31/12/2018 14:39

Journey there I wouldn’t care about. It’s more the after midnight bit of the journey I wouldn’t like. I love going out though and you’ll have a great time. I’m glad you’re going. Enjoy 🥳
