ALBUM to wash my washing machine?

lmrcpr · 30/12/2018 23:16

I have always put the occasional (theoretically monthly, realistically about twice a year) empty wash on at 90, with a tiny bit of washing up liquid to clean the machine (soft water area,I think hard water areas have to have different cleaning).

I must normally do it when no one else is home, but my husband has just been very confused when he asked what was in the machinine and thinks I am mad and that no one else does it.

I’ve never done it

FlyingMonkeys · 30/12/2018 23:17

I run a pack of washing machine cleaner through a cycle every now and again. Plus a vinegar rinse.

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 30/12/2018 23:18

Many machines recommend a service wash as you describe. I do mine every few months.

Smidge001 · 30/12/2018 23:18

You're supposed to do a 90 degree wash every now and then, to clean the machine. But I don't think I've got around to one yet in the past 5 years!! (I do my towels on 60 though so am hopeful that's hot enough to help)

TheBabyAteMyBrain · 30/12/2018 23:19

I would probably go with something from Wet Wet Wet or S.O.A.P...Grin

I put bleach in the empty drum in mine at 90! Not very often I might add, but smells fresh afterwards!

ChuckyMonkey · 30/12/2018 23:20

I do a 90 degree wash every few months with a squirt of bleach in the dispenser drawer.

Bumblebee39 · 30/12/2018 23:21

Yes about once a month (wash very regularly normally at least one wash a day)

DramaAlpaca · 30/12/2018 23:23

I do a service wash very occasionally.

megletthesecond · 30/12/2018 23:23

I do a 90° empty maintenance wash every month.

ThePoliticiansPraiseMyName · 30/12/2018 23:24

I do it at least once a month, and after every time I wash the dog's bed. Sometimes use the packs of washing machine cleaner, otherwise just use a bit of detergent. Also take the drawer out and wash that and wipe round the seals with a cloth and bit of detol Smile

funnelfanjo · 30/12/2018 23:26

Every six months or so I pull out the dispenser drawer and degunk the fabric conditioner bit Envy (not envy) and remove black mould inside the machine, wipe the door with limescale remover, clean the filter then do a 90 degree wash with washing machine cleaner.

Very hard water round here, so I use Calgon with each wash, I trust that is keeping the innards that I can’t see free of scale.

BackforGood · 30/12/2018 23:27

I've never, ever done a service wash.
Only heard of them since reading MN.

I do one every couple of months, it helps stop soap build up in the machine as well. Particularly with using cooler washes alot.

Crunchymum · 30/12/2018 23:30

Mine tells me (every 40 washes I believe) to do a maintenance wash.

[If I don't then it doesn't remind me until the next 39 washes have been done]

2019HereWeCome · 30/12/2018 23:31

We do ours every month or two - the machine has a dedicated drum clean cycle and is the only cycle that allows a 90° washing temperature. We use that Dr. Beckman stuff from Home Bargains and it does loosen a load of greenish, slimy, grimey stuff that I then wipe away out of the holes in the drum. The washer repair man said the other day that it breaks down mould and soap residue and makes the seals last longer (we got him out because I overloaded the machine and it started to smell of "burn". Whoops!)

lmrcpr · 30/12/2018 23:32

Thanks, I thought ithat was a normall thing to do.
Sorry about typo in title, I don't know how to fix it.

I do one the odd time probably once a year or so. But I clean the drawer and rubber seal every couple of weeks. I think I should be using calgon but I don't.

Qcng · 30/12/2018 23:35

Go for The Bubbles.

Vicky1990 · 30/12/2018 23:39

Why would you need to clean a washing machine, it does that every time you use it !!!!.
That's why it's called a washing machine.

lololove · 30/12/2018 23:43

I do a 90 degree wash every time I wash something the dogs are involved with (their towels/bedding etc) and I do a proper service wash approx every 3-4 months as its a VERY hard water area and the filters are inside and not possible for us to get to so i want to make sure it's clean and clear.

mindutopia · 30/12/2018 23:47

I do it about every 2 months because we use cloth nappies and I feel it needs a clean because wee and poo goes in there. Otherwise I normally wouldn’t unless it was dirty or smelled.

Thehop · 30/12/2018 23:48

I do it every week with a squirt of bleach on and pop the drawer in the sink to wash. My last washer died so I look after this one!

DustyCropHopper · 30/12/2018 23:50

I was told I should do a 90 degree wash monthly by a machine engineer as although lower heat washers are good for the environment they are not good for a machine apparently!
