In the spirit of New Year New Me... my resolution is to take lunch in and not buy the to die for sandwiches from the sandwich bar at work almost everyday...

I'm always busy and tend to eat at my desk and catch up with emails/colleagues/the news as I eat.

I was just wondering what are no go foods for office etiquette to you?

For example, can I take a sandwich with Gherkin relish? Curried lentil soup? Mackerel?

Tbh I don’t really care - we have a team who sit next to us and someone often brings in leftovers which when reheated literally smell like dog shit so if you avoid that I think you’ll be fine Grin

SneakyGremlins · 30/12/2018 17:14

No fish, no curry, no allergens.

Finfintytint · 30/12/2018 17:14

I think the general consensus is not to cook any fish in a microwave.

YouWereRight · 30/12/2018 17:14

Fish pie and hot dogs. Grim.

AgentProvocateur · 30/12/2018 17:14

No hot fish. It stinks the microwave out. Other than that, anything goes.

MulticolourMophead · 30/12/2018 17:14

Don't take fish in. We have a microwave and when people do fish it stinks the kitchen out.

AgentProvocateur · 30/12/2018 17:15

Cross post x 4! Grin

ParisBerlin · 30/12/2018 17:15

I'm curious what leftovers these are? My personal pet peeve is banana because I hate them, but very common and one I keep quiet about!

No hot fish, no hot cheese.

CassandraCross · 30/12/2018 17:17

Nothing too smelly, especially fish or stinky cheese, seems to be the general view.

ParisBerlin · 30/12/2018 17:17

No allergens surely isn't a rule, I eat trail mix at my desk...

BluthsFrozenBananas · 30/12/2018 17:17

No cooking broccoli or popcorn in the microwave. Burnt popcorn stinks the place out for days.

PooleySpooley · 30/12/2018 17:18

I have no idea but the stench puts me off eating my own lunch so all good Grin

IHaveBrilloHair · 30/12/2018 17:18

No crisps if eating at your desk, it's the noise.

PooleySpooley · 30/12/2018 17:18

Who the hell is eating popcorn in the office?! 😂😂

ParisBerlin · 30/12/2018 17:18

I had a manager who used to ban hot food being consumed at desks because of the smell, but assuming soups etc are safe

Don't use the communal microwave to heat anything pungent like curry or oily fish.

Egg or tuna sandwiches should be well wrapped or boxed if going in a communal fridge. Likewise fresh pineapple, which taints everything.

Label everything - masking tape is great for labelling things!

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 30/12/2018 17:18

No fish, the smell lingers. Allergens are okay if they don't need cooking but you have to wipe the microwave out otherwise. I'd ban bananas because they stink but sadly I'm not powerful enough yet Grin

PooleySpooley · 30/12/2018 17:18

My manager eats crisps when on the phone - it’s fucking disgusting.

ShowerOfClowns · 30/12/2018 17:19

Home made tuna sandwich ok...opening tinned fish in the office not ok (I once worked with a colleague who used to open a tin of mackerel or sardines at their desk 😷)

CoughLaughFart · 30/12/2018 17:19

I’d ban people from complaining about food.

goforkyourself · 30/12/2018 17:19

Hard boiled eggs, an ex colleague used to bring one in every day and mash it up to put on toast Xmas Envy Not nearly as bad as my mother though who saw nothing wrong in taking egg sandwiches to eat on the plane Xmas Confused

Sugarhunnyicedtea · 30/12/2018 17:19

Broccoli/cabbage soup. Someone in my office eats a variant of this regularly and the smell is unreal

MsVestibule · 30/12/2018 17:19

Definitely no fish in the microwave 🤢. Apart from that, anything goes AFAIC.

Penners99 · 30/12/2018 17:20

Last place I worked at (as a contractor) there was zero food and drink allowed in the office. You had to go to the canteen to eat or drink. Clock out as you left office and clock back in when you return.
