To wish I'd cancelled NYE celebration

DH and I have a fairly large group of friends who we see quite a bit of (think monthly at least). We hosted New Year last time with about 14 or so and it was a good laugh except the cleanup . Two friends stayed over and helped in the morning. We offered to host again and we only have 6 including DH and myself. AIBU to wish I had cancelled as it's such an effort for so few people and I'm genuinely worried it will be boring! The friend who stayed over last year is coming with her OH and is very keen to come (they are staying again) so I can't just cancel. But, I wish I had!

It doesn't have to be a massive effort! A few bottles of bubbly, some food and maybe a few games? Cards Against Humanity is hilarious (and very adult!). Turn it into a games night and have some fun!

Fletchasaurus · 30/12/2018 17:38

Oddly, that's what I was thinking! I'm not sure how one of the people will take that though. I do have alot of prosecco to use up!! I think I just wish there was a few more from the group and I wish that people had said they weren't coming if that makes sense - they just haven't replied!

6 is a much nicer number than 14. You can actually play a game after a few drinks etc. It'll be a laugh

Inferiorbeing · 30/12/2018 17:44

We only have 6 of us this year, usually it was only 4 (with different friends who for various reasons in the friendship group's aren't coming tomorrow) and we always have fun, I'm doing a small buffet, we are playing games and getting drunk! We always prefer those nights to going out.

We are playing cards against humanity and scene it, we will probably end up playing poker or something too!

GiBlues · 30/12/2018 18:14

Heads Up! app on your phone is a good game especially after a few drinks, if cards against humanity is too out there for your friends.
(The accents and impressions round was hilarious Christmas evening after a sharing a couple of bottles of gin!)

Less people means less work!

We often have 6 friends over for the evening. It’s a good number-it’s just a nice friendly gathering, much easier to play games/chat etc like that.

youarenotkiddingme · 30/12/2018 18:18

Think positively.

Less people = less mess

Less people = less costs of food and less effort needed

Less people = less having to fight for your voice to be heard. Nice conversation and small enough group for a game or something.

Less people = more likely not to be up way later than you feel able as less people to shoo out or off to bed!

Enjoy Wine

"6 is a much nicer number than 14."

I agree. IMO 6 is the optimum number for entertaining as everybody talks to each other without separating into cliques.

LEMtheoriginal · 30/12/2018 18:24

Fewer, its fewer people - sorry

clearly i haven't been invited to any nye parties Xmas Blush

LoniceraJaponica · 30/12/2018 18:27

Neither have I LEM

runwithme · 30/12/2018 18:44

There is only the four of us and two DC. Looking forward to it! Much more relaxed, less pressure. 👌🏾

ssd · 30/12/2018 18:49

I can't think of anything worse than playing games at a New Years Eve party, or a NYE party at all

which is just as we as we haven't been invited anywhere either {grin]

LoniceraJaponica · 30/12/2018 19:40

I love playing games. Unfortunately OH hates it so we don't often get the chance to.

ssd · 30/12/2018 20:22

dh isn't into games either

lostvoice · 30/12/2018 21:44

DH and BIL made plans, but didn't run it past SIL, surprise surprise she had made plans with her family too.
so now DH and I are at home with an under 1 and nobody coming round.
We will most likely end up playing games just the two of us, DH is the one who lives games and I generally just go along with the majority, i would have loved people round!

Fletchasaurus · 31/12/2018 07:08

I'm hoping the games go down well tonight. Heads Up is a brilliant idea too, thanks! I have party food, pizza and drinks. Still a bit worried, but feeling more positive. Slightly concerned I may not last until midnight given the appalling nlights sleep I have just had!!

CurlyMango · 31/12/2018 15:07

We are going to a great friends for a low key games night. It will be great. Just right, not loads of people just the right ones

ssd · 31/12/2018 23:53

It's funny how my idea of a games night is others idea of a great night

Fletchasaurus · 01/01/2019 22:21

For those who were kind enough to make me snap out of it, we had a great night which went on very late! Blush Happy 2019 to you all Wine
