To think chewing gum is vile?

I've just spent 30 minutes icing and hacking chewing gum off my handbag and the scarf that was in it. I'm not sure how it got there (I don't use gum), I discovered it late last night after a flight and a train journey so it could have been stuck under a chair on one of those. This isn't the first time I've had to try and get someone else's chewed goop off my possessions either. Why on earth can't people dispose of it properly instead of sticking it where it ends up on my stuff?

It's just grim.

As a teacher who has mastered the art of moving tables and chairs without ever touching underneath - I hear you!

CandyCreeper · 29/12/2018 17:17

Thought it was just me who hated it. Its vile. I Never use gum

Outwards · 29/12/2018 17:26

Horrible stuff.

Wish we were like Singapore, it's criminal there!

ScreamingBadSanta · 29/12/2018 17:28

I couldn't agree more. Vile stuff in every way.

Seniorcitizen1 · 29/12/2018 17:33

It is not the gum that is vile it is those who chew it and don’t discard it responsibly who are vile

ScreamingBadSanta · 29/12/2018 17:50

I do find it a bit sickening if I'm talking to someone who is chewing, though, even if they discard it responsibly. Something about the idea of chewing a piece of rubbery stuff turns my stomach.

AGHHHH · 29/12/2018 17:51

It's gross.

ellesworth · 29/12/2018 18:19

I hate it, one of dh's relatives chews it all the time, to the point that he was chewing it at the altar at his own wedding!
I cannot chew it without heaving.

Bumblebee39 · 29/12/2018 18:22

Just fold it up in a receipt or a tissue or napkin and then no harm done

I enjoy chewing gum sometimes and am not going to stop. I have never put it under a seat or table

Jaguarana · 29/12/2018 18:24

I agree, I can't bear the stuff. I've a new colleague who chews gum all the time, it's horrible. She doesn't report to me unfortunately, if she did I'd be asking her not to do it at work.

WonderTweek · 29/12/2018 18:31

I'm an ex smoker and have swapped the fags for chewing gum and I do have a couple of pieces a day. It's probably not the most attractive thing to do but it keeps my anxiety at bay, and I always, always put them in the bin afterwards. So we're not all bad. 😁

It's bloody annoying when people spit them on the ground or leave them on chairs though. What is that about?

John4703 · 29/12/2018 18:40

It is horrible finding it stuck anywhere, I used to chew gum, (I'm not sure why I stopped) and always swallowed it. It does no harm to eat it and it saved the problem of disposal. I hate finding it stuck under a table to chair.

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 29/12/2018 18:41

YANBU it's revolting stuff

Bombardier25966 · 29/12/2018 18:46

I chew it for anxiety, without it I can't leave the house. I dispose of it in a tissue (placed in my bag it there is no bin).

UserName31456789 · 29/12/2018 18:58

Hate it too, someone loudly chewing gum turns me murderous.

PositiveVibez · 29/12/2018 19:23

Can't bear seeing and hearing people chew it. It knocks me sick.

Natsku · 29/12/2018 19:27

Gum isn't vile, it's very good for dental health (xylitol gum, not sugary hubba bubba obviously) but people not disposing of it properly is vile.

CandyCreeper · 29/12/2018 19:28

Its the gum aswell for me, it literally makes me feel sick seeing someone chewing it. Would love it to be banned.

MissionItsPossible · 29/12/2018 19:32

Chewing gum is good for your teeth but people that spit it on the floor or stick it underneath a table or a seat are disgusting. Sometimes, if I’m unable to dispose it, I’ll leave it so long in my mouth it starts to dissolve a bit and feels vile but would never be disgusting enough not to dispose properly. So YABU but I understand where you’re coming from.

PenCreed · 29/12/2018 19:38

TBH, I can't bear the chewing either (which is general - loathe the sound of people eating) but I understand that is my problem. Now that I've rescued my bag and scarf and done other things for a bit, I recognise I might be being slightly U on the whole thing being vile.

People leaving it stuck under chairs/tables etc though, I hold to my original point.

The sound is very annoying, if they chew with their mouths open (slightly makes me want to smother my bloke with his pillow when he chews gum loudly in bed)

Sarahlou63 · 29/12/2018 20:00

Chewing gum is good for your teeth and (apparently) aids concentration - I always pop a gum before driving. It's only a problem if it's not disposed of properly - like everything else.

Bumblebee39 · 29/12/2018 20:47

Yes it's a definite improvement on smoking or anxiety (I chew it to sue me in not smoking and in being less anxious)
I think the only issue really is how it's disposed of
