Fancy dress dilemma

My dh and I have been invited to a fancy dress party on 29th Dec with a SUMMER BEACH theme. My dh is absolutely refusing to dress in anything even vaguely summery ie shorts/flipflops etc and I, being on the large-side, have massive body-issues so am equally anxious about showing pallid, winter flesh! Would it be reasonable to wear ordinary clothes?

Go ordinary. Stick a pair of sunglasses on.

Could you get away with t-shirts and jeans/light-coloured trousers? Or long, thin cotton skirt/sundress for you, worn with summery cardigan? You could wear sunglasses and carry a beach bag instead of your handbag to complete the holiday look.

I go for a bright coloured maxi dress for you, with a matching cardigan if you don't like your arms. For him could you pick up a cheap Hawain shirt with jeans?

Do dressed for winter, and say its summer in Australia...?

Steamedbadger · 27/12/2018 17:53

Make a head-dress and go as a cocktail?

Thanks, ladies. I like your thinking. My dh may go for something like this ….

Oh and sun hat, sun glasses, straw bag instead of handbag if you have one

Wear a raincoat and jumper. Call it Summer on Bognor beach.

Go as a a man selling cd’s and fake sunglasses and a holiday rep? You could wear normal clothes then and just add accessories? Or Candy floss and a hot dog? Punch and Judy? Deck chair attendant? Donkey? Lifeboat volunteer? The list is endless!

Allthewaves · 27/12/2018 18:46

Surely DH could wear trousers, short sleeve short and trainers with pair sunglasses.

I went as a tourist one year, it was March but suddenly decided to snow and it was freezing, so no way I would go as originally planned in a short and T-Shirt.

I went with jeans, trainers, T-Shirt and a sun hat with glasses on top plus camera around my neck.
