To cook far too much ham?

moofolk · 24/12/2018 14:17

I've ended up with a ham three times the size I thought I was buying. It's nearly six kilos, significantly bigger than my turkey.

I have had to chop it into two to fit in my biggest pans, should I cook it all now? I really don't want to cook again after tomorrow but the internet says it only keeps for three days after it's cooked surely that's not right?!

I think you can freeze ham after it's been cooked.

I haven't checked that tho.

We have a massive ham, once cooked we're slicing and freezing it and intending to live off ham sandwiches in January

MatildaTheCat · 24/12/2018 14:29

Ham lasts ages but unless you are feeding hoards I would cut in half and freeze one half. I cooked a 3kilo ham yesterday and it’s pretty big. You can go off ham and turkey after a few days. Smile

Can you not freeze some of it? Either freeze half uncooked, or freeze what you don't need after it's cooked?

Can you get sick of ham? Grin

Turkey yes definitely, but I'm not sure I understand 'too much' ham.

HotInWinter · 24/12/2018 14:30

I think I'd freeze half an uncooked ham, and just cook 3kg now.

Cold ham and Turkey left overs are the the second best bit about Christmas (stuffing is the best!)

Sitranced · 24/12/2018 14:32

No such thing as too much ham.

IHaveBrilloHair · 24/12/2018 14:33

It keeps for ages uncooked.

moofolk · 24/12/2018 14:37

Thanks all. Yes I love ham and was planning on having plenty of leftovers but this looks like too much!
I've got half of it in a pan now I'll hold off on the other half for now. Haven't even got room for it in the freezer!

If I have more than I need I cook it, then slice it as thinly as I can and vacuum pack it. It will keep longer in the fridge if it is vacuum packed, and it freezes better as well. I have found that freezing ham without vacuum packing it leads to watery salty nastiness when it is defrosted.

Ham and chestnut risotto is very nice ...

I bloody love a home cooked ham, but even I might struggle with 3kg. Once I've had a few ham sandwiches, ham egg and chips, turkey and ham pie, a carbonara, and a few ham salads, I'm all hammed out.
