To decorate a messy house?

I keep putting off putting the tree up and making it xmassy until the house is clean and tidy... But there's always something that needs doing and now I'm running out of time

AIBU to clean a messy house? Or should I just thrash it out once DCs in bed and do the tree and decs tomorrow?

Tia xx

If you put it up the mess might drive you mad!!!

bumblebee39 · 22/12/2018 17:04

Or drive me to tidy it @stayathomer 😂 always hopeful! I have no idea where all the crap comes from, frankly!

Clean up first...decorations don't make mess look any better.

81Byerley · 22/12/2018 17:07

If really desperate, run around with bin liners and put all the crap in them, then put the binliners in a spare room/cupboard/shed/garage/loft/car boot until the decorations come down again.

Buy a really big tree skirt and hide the junk under there?

bumblebee39 · 22/12/2018 17:13

Like the tree skirt idea! It's fake so going on a wrapped cardboard box but tree skirt sounds good, and box is full of food that doesn't fit in the kitchen 😂

No spare space to hide it/chuck it
Trying to build up to tidying now. My toddler undoes my work just as quickly though so might wait until he's in bed.

If I waited till the house wasn't messy I'd never have the tree up.

I generally clean up the downstairs rooms using the 'shove everything in the spare room' method.

bumblebee39 · 22/12/2018 17:17

Wish I had a spare room! I think that is my no1 problem this Xmas, lack of space.

Having a baby soon so hope I've managed to move because I have no idea where to put a bin bag full of stuff let alone a baby and attributing stuff 😂

This is why we put the tree up later than usual this year, I wanted the carpets washed and loads of stuff gone. I knew it would make me feel down if I put it up whilst it was still messy. I would blitz it tonight and put the tree up tomorrow morning then go through the bits remaining that take longer like toy trunks, cupboards etc afterwards. Good luck!

OneStepMoreFun · 22/12/2018 17:19

Just tidy the room the tree is in. remove all big clutter items from it. Hoover, polish and dim the lights. It will look fine. Then do the rest of the house as and when you have time and energy.

bumblebee39 · 22/12/2018 17:19

I Kind of feel like filling a few black bags and starting over with the kids toys.

DS wouldn't notice
But DD will be upset if I throw away a Lego card 🙄

@OneStepMoreFun

That actually sounds like a better idea. It's just the kids room that's a nightmare the rest is highly doable.

At this stage I'd do the late minimum (maybe bag stuff and stick out of the way in a bedroom to be sorted through later), have a quick hoover and get the tree up.

Your house doesn't have to be perfect for christmas, and there is only a finite amount if time left.

That's it-you're nesting!!! I'm the same, I'd love to bin most of the stuff around here in time for Santa!!! Best of luck bumblebee!!Flowers

bumblebee39 · 22/12/2018 22:32

Hoovered and tree would be up if I didn't need a screw driver I don't have for the lights (it's prelit so need to do the lights first)
Another shopping trip tomorrow... Sigh thought I was done shopping at least...

Now mid wrapping

The kids room is a mess it's going to be hell with Xmas chaos on top but oh well

I think I finally understand the purpose of a "Boxing Day"

Really wanted to clean the mucky handprints off the walls mop and clean properly but it's half way there which will do

I think I am the only one who'll care (or even notice) visitors included

Thanks @stayathomer

My nesting seems to swing between bleaching and chucking things and hoarding things which is a conflict my house is at the epicentre of

The struggle is real
