The dancing in circles giving it socks

Cheesy music

Seeing usually responsible, professional people dropping it like it's hot and what not

I love them too. There’s a weird snobbery about them on MN - it’s almost a competitive sport trying to show just how horrified you are at the idea of going (‘I’d rather eat my own spleen and then have someone shit in the hole in my chest’ etc.)

We had ours last night and it was great fun. Plus the HR woman got pissed and told me loads of things I shouldn’t know Xmas Grin

ComtesseDeSpair · 21/12/2018 13:37

Oh, absolutely. The most staid colleagues who, by the end of the night, are giving it the full Mariah Carey on the jukebox. And making fun of whoever it always is who gets tipsy on one measure of Bailey’s

And then discovering our CEO has an almighty hangover the following morning when he comes in like this:

OP do you mean as in having the drinks in the actual workplace like in The Office? I have always wanted to do that!

Flairhead · 21/12/2018 13:37

I do too! I don't understand people who say they wouldn't socialise with the people they work with. I love my colleagues and have had many an enjoyable night out drinking with them! Plans have already been made for Hogmanay!

Agreed I think it’s quite nice to let you hair down with colleagues especially if you’ve all been working very hard in the lead up, but appreciate it depends on the people you work with - I’m lucky that mine are a good bunch. I also doubt it’s very fun if you are teetotal and your colleagues are all hammered!

There’s quite a nice camaraderie when you all drag yourselves in with a shared hangover the next day, dissecting the evening and sending someone to fetch bacon butties!

StealthPolarBear · 21/12/2018 13:50

Me too. Not feeling up to going this year and am disappointed.
Cough laugh fart, agree about the snobbery. Same as for weddings. I love a wedding as do most of the people I know. Some are more enjoyable than others, some are more of a pain, requiring travel etc. None are actively dreaded in the way most seem to be on here.

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 21/12/2018 13:55

I used to love my work Xmas drinks I was usually the "merriest"

Polarbearflavour · 21/12/2018 13:58

I never go to mine. It’s not unreasonable but I would rather not go. So I don’t. It doesn’t really matter.

Thisonewilldo · 21/12/2018 14:01

It depends on the workplace. I used to love them when I worked in a really relaxed office and would happily chat away to everyone.

Now my office is soooo stuffy. No one ever chit chats beyond work or moaning about managers etc, the christmas lunches are very much because its expected and its clear that no one wants to be there. Thankfully I gave up working Fridays so now can give it the 'no childcare' excuse and avoid.

Pinkyponkcustard · 21/12/2018 14:06

I love all works parties. As long as you aren’t the drunkest person there you are laughing.

I don’t get all the “I never go to the works do, I hate them” - thing is you spend 35 hours a week with your colleagues if I hated them that much I’d look for a new job

IrenetheQuaint · 21/12/2018 14:08

I love them too! Really nice to have a laugh together. I have a rule never to go on to the after drinks post closing time, though... at that point things start getting really messy.

Biancadelriosback · 21/12/2018 14:15

Another one who loves them. We have ours in our actual office too which is really nice as (for me) it reminds me that the building is just a building and those I work with are just people.

WetWednesdays · 21/12/2018 14:21

I used to hate them when I worked in the public sector. Now I work in hospitality it's sooo much fun - free food and drink and even (drunk) Santa to hand out the secret Santa presents!

DaedricLordSlayer · 21/12/2018 14:22

had a great one last weekend the year before was ok and a bit of a "do I have to go?"

This years was set at work and had stupid games like wheel barrow races.

My secret Santa prezzy was was really well thought out and funny, most secret Santa's were pretty good apart from the person who is horrible to everyone got a really crap one Grin (no I didnt send it)

I love work do's when I've been there awhile and feel relaxed.

Last2Know · 21/12/2018 14:32

Highlight this year was my 47 year old colleague attempting a "slut drop" (awful name I know) and being unable to get back up.

WhatsItCalled · 21/12/2018 14:36

Oh I love the shoes Grin Grin

Me too! I'm self-employed and gutted that I don't get a work Christmas do. The closest I get is treating myself to a lonely hot chocolate in Starbucks Xmas Sad

sar302 · 21/12/2018 15:00

Always a great chance to find out who's shagging ;)
