Awake and scared I have sepsis

butitsstillnighttime · 21/12/2018 02:11

Hi, sorry I just need some reassurance if poss, have had flu since last Thursday, but recurrent strep throat for a month or two prior. Was bad until Wednesday morn when fever broke, but have still had to do fair amount of looking after 19 month old (also Ill) so rest in short supply.

Started to feel increasingly bad this eve- aching in chest and limbs and general weird feeling. Have woken at 1 feeling like ice, can't stop shivering, body and head aches like it's folding up on itself. Took aspirin before bed and paracetamol at 1, have several trousers jumpers on, still so cold and might puke.
Just laying here rocking myself from side to side, feel wide awake.

Is this just round two of flu or do I need to wake DP/think about getting seen- been mindful of sepsis symptoms with my son as he's been really poorly but this has caught me by surprise as thought I was getting better- this is a sudden deterioration for me instead.

I know this isn't a doctors surgery but just feel a bit scared. DP hasn't been so kind this week (he's a shit nurse) so worried to wake him, plus he needs his sleep to deal with our son tomo

Has anyone recovered from sepsis and how did you feel when coming down with it?

Shaking calmed now after an hour, feeling hotter and sleepy still crazy aches
Maybe I'm being a fool for posting but just feel a bit alarmed

999 if you suspect, they say an hour for sepsis so please don't wait x

wtf1981 · 21/12/2018 02:18

Go to urgent care now x

orangepopp · 21/12/2018 02:18

what would you do if your DC had these symptoms? ring 999

Isadora2007 · 21/12/2018 02:18

Honestly please call at least 111 if
Not 999. I am Sure you’d rather be wrong and call than right and not Call. And being worried or a feeling of doom is actually a symptom.

ladyflower23 · 21/12/2018 02:19

Hi. I have no idea about sepsis I’m afraid, but perhaps calling 111 would be a good idea? They should be able to help work out whether you need to be seen tonight or could wait for a gp appointment tomorrow. Hope you feel better soon, it sounds like you’ve been going through a hard time.

MulledWineMayhem · 21/12/2018 02:22

Sounds absolutely awful, don’t know much about sepsis but regardless with those symptoms you should be seen. Call 111, if you get worse quickly 999.

Dotty1970 · 21/12/2018 02:25

I hope you've 999 or gone to a and e.... Hope you're OK.
Don't bother with 111 as they would only send you to a and e with sepsis markers.

nocoolnamesleft · 21/12/2018 02:26

111 would say an ambulance for that. So cut straight to 999.

Punto1 · 21/12/2018 02:28

How to spot sepsis in adults
Seek medical help urgently if you (or another adult) develop any of these signs:
Slurred speech or confusion
Extreme shivering or muscle pain
Passing no urine (in a day)
Severe breathlessness
It feels like you’re going to die
Skin mottled or discoloured

motherone · 21/12/2018 02:43

Hey I would ring 111 and wake yr husband. I know as I have a bit of an unsympathetic husband also how hard it can be to ask for help but if you feel as bad as you say you do then he needs to know and help you get help. What is yr temp? You said yr fever broke earlier but what is is now? High low? What about yr pulse? Do you feel yr heart is racing? Have u got the shivers? All this will be asked if you ring the out of hours doctor. Hope u feel better soon Thanks

Get yourself seen for peace of mind if nothing else. My little one also had sepsis when she contracted meningitis last year (incidentally the bug that caused her meningitis was the same that caused her strep throat 4 months earlier) the signs she presented were classic sepsis signs and not presented as meningitis (no rash, photosensitivity etc)
Very high fever
Lethargic
Mottled skin
Very cold hands and feet
No urine output
Shivery
Fast heart rate
Eventually vomiting and then unconsciousness.
As symptoms are very flu like it can make it hard to detect early on but deterioration happens rapidly. It’s very possible your having a second wind of flu especially if your exhausted looking after little one so try not to worry but for their sake and yours just get yourself checked out and hope you get on the mend soon.

Daisychainsandglitter · 21/12/2018 05:01

My DD had sepsis at 3 weeks old and was very ill. Like PP said, I hope you're in hospital now getting the treatment you need. Flowers

Soontobe60 · 21/12/2018 05:14

One obvious symptom of sepsis is not being able to think coherently enough to POST ON MUMSNET.
Even with flu as bad as you're describing, doing the same would be a challenge. The middle of the night is a lonely place when you're ill, your imagination really takes over. Take plenty of paracetamol and fluids then try to sleep. Don't let your DH go to work, you need looking after.

Spagyetti · 21/12/2018 05:27

Soontobe60 HUGELY irresponsible to have posted your last post. Sepsis shouldn't be dismissed like that - I saw someone nearly die of it and it happens very quickly. OP I hope you called 111/999/got checked out and didn't take Soontobe60's advice.

londonrach · 21/12/2018 06:12

Call 111 op. Hope you feel better soon. X

RitaMills · 21/12/2018 06:22

When I had sepsis I had those symptoms, I felt like I was gasping for breath as well and I was being sick constantly. I also felt like I was going to die, that’s what made me go to A&E, I was crying on my bed telling DP I was going to die it was a horrible feeling. My skin was grey and I was severely dehydrated as well. I ended up getting emergency surgery to wash out infection and triple therapy IV for weeks, it took a long time for me to feel better again and I was off work for a long time.

Not just before I went to hospital but when the sepsis was taking hold I probable could’ve posted on MN so please don’t use that as a benchmark, you know your own body and if you’re worried seek help. Better being wrong than the alternative. I hope it isn’t sepsis Flowers

why100000 · 21/12/2018 06:27

Definitely call 999 for an ambulance. I hope you are okay OP.

why100000 · 21/12/2018 06:29

Bypass your partner unless you need help getting to the door. How dare he be unsympathetic. Call 999 and then tell him on your way to the ambulance because he will have to look after your little one.

ThatsWotSheSaid · 21/12/2018 06:33

Hope your getting medical help OP.

Rememory · 21/12/2018 06:35

Hope you've spoken to a medical professional OP Thanks

LotsToThinkOf · 21/12/2018 06:37

OP I hope you're ok, if you haven't already then please just get yourself to a hospital - any which way.

You absolutely can post on mumsnet and be coherent when you have sepsis I DID AND WAS. About an hour later I was in serious danger with my health.

My symptoms were rigours, flushed face and a feeling of not knowing what to do with myself - so tired but restless, hungry but feeling sick. I also had a feeling of dread and that I had to get help which is apparently a main symptom.

My drs was closed, I couldn't get through to them so I sort of gave up. I didn't feel it was serious enough to ring 111 and 4 days pp the thought of hauling us all out plus a newborn was too much.

My mum dropped in to check on me, she drove me back to the maternity ward where I collapsed as soon as I walked in. I don't remember much over the 6 days after that but I did recover.

Please get some help, ring an ambulance if you can't get to hospital. I really hope you're ok x

Spagyetti · 24/12/2018 03:27

Are you OK, OP?
