Simmer it in cheap cola (as Peter Kay would call it Rola Cola). For an hour or so I think depending on size.

Take it out, remove the skin, score the fat. Soak with honey and wholegrain mustard, or marmalade and into the oven to roast for 20 minutes or so.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 20/12/2018 12:30

Roast it. 20 mins per pound. Take it out, whip off the skin, glaze it with something sweet, sticky and spicy, then bung it back in for another 20 minutes. Yum : )

vampirethriller · 20/12/2018 12:37

Dark rum and muscovado sugar for the glaze!

ScribblyGum · 20/12/2018 12:44

I steam/slow roast mine overnight in a tent of tinfoil over a roasting dish full of cider and spices. It sits in the turned off oven all day staying warm then before serving I do the scoring fat and then a honey and ginger glaze.
This is for Christmas Eve or Boxing Day as the cooking time is 13 hours.
Tastes absolutely delicious though. Do it every year.

FutureDays · 20/12/2018 12:59

I slow cook mine for 8 hours in coke, then remove the rind, score the fat, pop a load of cloves in, glaze with marmalade or honey and then pop in the oven for 20mins

5foot5 · 20/12/2018 13:00

Slow roast in a tent of foil for 30 minutes a pound. But 30 minutes before the end take it out of the foil, turn up the oven to 200, take off the skin, cut criss-crosses in the fat, stud with cloves and brush with mustard and brown sugar. Then return to oven for last 30 minutes.

So Delia basically.

Travis1 · 20/12/2018 13:48

I don't think I have a pot big enough to simmer it in Xmas Confused

Simmer the joint in either coke (full fat) or ginger wine with cinnamon sticks and star anise for few hours.

Pull it apart/shred it, put it in an oven proof dish, sprinkle brown sugar across it, drizzle with maple syrup and put in a hot oven for 20 mins to make the edges crispy

userschmoozer · 20/12/2018 13:59

You could braise it in cola in the oven if you use a roasting bag or lots of foil. You might need to turn it a couple of times.

delilabell · 20/12/2018 14:01

I slow cooker mine. Brown sugar on the bottom of the slow cooker with a teaspoon of water. Cook for about 6 hours. Yum

Toooldtocareanymore · 20/12/2018 14:04

I do mine in the oven the night before in baking tray , so no problem fitting it in, with a can of cider ( 2 if very large ) and make a tinfoil tent , it keep it very moist and it doesn't dry it out means more room in oven next day, then if I want it glazed the glaze goes on the next day back in oven

iforgotwhatiwasgoingtosay · 20/12/2018 14:10

Simmer in Ginger Ale, remove skin, score the meat, cover in marmalade cook in oven for half hour

Disfordarkchocolate · 20/12/2018 14:20

After last year's salty disaster from M&S I'll be doing my own in the slow cooker. Very nervous @deliabell so you glaze and then bake for a bit afterwards or is it ready to serve?

ChoctasticFantastic · 20/12/2018 14:26

Simmer in orange juice and spices (cloves, cinnamon, star anise, allspice), peel off skin, score fat in diamond pattern and stud each intersection with a clove, glaze with a thick layer of soft brown sugar mixed with a little orange juice, salt & mustard powder then roast with orange juice in bottom of the pan, basting every 5 mins.

rosydreams · 20/12/2018 14:31

i put it in the slow cooker with pineapple juice till just done and then glaze for the oven.

oven 200 degrees make the glaze with 1 cup of light brown sugar,1/4 cup of honey or maple syrup ,2 teaspoons dry mustard mix.Get ham remove skin leave a layer of fat.score a diamond pattern then at each point stick clove in(not garlic the spice clove).Rub glaze all over then place in tray with foil over top cook 30mins.Take foil off make more glaze 1 cup brown sugar,1 teaspoon dry mustard now add a tiny drop of OJ just enough to make it pourable but thick .Pour all over gammon then 25mins in oven then done

Wellhellothere101 · 20/12/2018 14:37

These all sound lovely. How long roughly would I give gammon in the slow cooker?

Mywifenow · 20/12/2018 14:38

As an aside...has anyone bought the ham yet? I went to aldi yesterday but they only had those tiny cheap round ones..no big ones with skin on. They also had a smallish special boxed one but was ££. Anyone spotted any offers. I pressure cook in something sweet and warm through xmas day once glazed. I like the pineapple suggestion..will try that this year thanks. I used cloves one year...didn't like it, v strong taste. Xmas Smile

PoesyCherish · 20/12/2018 14:40

These sound so nice! We just simmer ours on the hob for a couple of hours. Might have to try one of these next year.

Mywifenow · 20/12/2018 14:43

Wellhello I would say about 10 hours. The stick you get will be nice in a ham.and lentil soup. I usually freeze it and make soup for the new year ( just taste it to make sure it's not too often salty first)

Mywifenow · 20/12/2018 14:43

Stick= stock

Xiaoxiong · 20/12/2018 14:47

@Mywifenow all the joints of meat are â…“ off at M&S at the moment, I got a 2kg gammon there this weekend with the skin on. Also whole chickens, beef joints, whole leg of lamb.

Wellhellothere101 · 20/12/2018 14:48

Thanks mywifenow. My ham is usually hard and tough if I roast it in the oven so I'm hoping it might be juicier and softer if I cook it in the slow cooker.

inchoccyheaven · 20/12/2018 14:51

I got our large gammon joint from lidl last week for £6 and they also have extra large joints of beef, pork and lamb too.

BiddyPop · 20/12/2018 15:17

For those doing a 13 hour roast in a low oven, what kind of temperature are we talking about?

Mywifenow · 20/12/2018 15:27

Thankyou Xiaoxiong and choccyheaven. Flowers I will try lidl tonight but I have an m& s close as back up x
