AIBU? School concert.

Hi all, just after some friendly advice before I potentially make a fool of myself!

DCs (8 and 6) school holds an outside carol concert each year. The children stand outside, at a distance from the parents, and sing for around 90 minutes. It is a whole school production.
Last year, after they had finished their 'bit', the children were sat sat down on the ground until the rest of the concert was finished.
Now, I consider myself to be quite a robust person, but was absolutely bloody freezing by the end, not to mention my DC sat on a frozen ground at night time in mid-December! I vowed we would not be attending again, as it was not a magical Christmas experience at all.
Fast forward to today, both my children have just informed me that if they do not attend the concert, they will not be allowed to attend the Christmas disco the next day.
This has not been communicated to parents at all. AIBU or is this the school trying to bully the children into attending an event their parents do not want to attend? It is obviously more than a few children not attending, or why bother with the disco threat?
So tell me mumsnet, do I cause a fuss, or suck up the concert?

TIA

Why don't they hold it indoors?? A few carols round an outdoor tree = fine. 90 mins = bonkers

I’d be speaking to the school. That doesn’t sound like fun at all and to exclude them from the disco if they don’t do it is ridiculous!

Dairyqueen2 · 13/12/2018 16:48

... don't cause a fuss, but do explain your point of view to the school

Could you check the arrangements before deciding whether or not to send them? The staff will probably have realised that sitting children on the ground for more than an hour in the cold was a bad idea.

Were your children bothered by sitting on the ground last year?

Claw001 · 13/12/2018 16:56

YANBU 90 minutes outside sat on the floor, must be freezing!

The not being able to attend the next day fun event, is pretty normal I think. Otherwise few would attend out of school events and a few would attend. Making it a bit pointless.

One of my son’s previous schools, used to hold a carol service (inside!) but at 7.30 in the evening. They made it compulsory!

Maybe have a word about holding it inside?

Thanks to everybody that replied. I decided to not go and hold our own carol service at home, complete with hot chocolate and marshmallows!
Surprise, surprise the performance (tonight) has been cancelled due to poor weather (well, duh!) Looks like the DC can go to their Christmas disco after all!
