Elf on the shelf fun or creepy

Considered getting one for my Dc for a few years but I can't bring myself to do it. I have a fear of creepy dolls Annabelle, Chucky etc so would have hated my DM bringing one of these little terrors into the house in the build up to Christmas. My problem is I'm not sure my dc would enjoy it or be scared to death that a doll is supposedly creeping around the house at night causing mischief. Surely I'm not the only one that it freaks out?? AIBU?

If you don't want to do it, don't do it. I think they're vile, personally.

seventhgonickname · 26/11/2018 22:11

Totally unnecessary. We have already had Christmas rammed down our throats all November, December should just be an advent calendar counting down the days.

Sparklingbrook · 26/11/2018 22:11

Neither really. Not really sure of the point of them though.

redastherose · 26/11/2018 22:13

Creepy in my opinion but my DD's are too old to have to been little when it became a thing so I'm possibly not the best person to ask. Also I think it's an added bit of stress on the parents that they really don't need running up to Christmas.

Houseonahill · 26/11/2018 22:14

Creepy as hell! I would have been terrified as a kid if I thought there was a doll moving around at night watching me.

AGHHHH · 26/11/2018 22:14

They're shit.

TealTurnip · 26/11/2018 22:19

Creepy imo. I don’t like the idea of a doll coming to life and causing mischief. And why would you purposely make a mess and wreck your house, then pretend a doll did it, and basically create extra work because you’ll have to tidy up? Plus it’s putting the idea in kids’ heads that this sort of behaviour is funny and is just “mischief”, when in actual fact it would be naughty and unacceptable for a child to do those things.

Sparklingbrook · 26/11/2018 22:21

I didn't realise they did the causing mayhem and being naughty bit until I saw some of it on FB.

I thought it just sat on a shelf to check if the children had been good or bad and grassed them up to Santa.

kimmy3001 · 26/11/2018 22:24

They even look like psychopaths trapped in a dolls body! I would have been laid awake at night wondering if it was coming up the stairs and into my room. The whole thing just doesn't sit easy with me.

Agreed I think they are unnecessary too. Same goes for Xmas eve boxes and wrapping up books to unwrap to read every night for 25 days! I barely have time to brush my hair with 3 DC under 7!

Creepy, not because of the mischief, but because of the monitoring. Same as thr lle Santa Cam. Who the hell wants to introduce the idea of CCTV monitoring their children's behaviour in their own home at all times of the day and night? Sinister as fuck.

I have worked in the criminal justice system for over 15 years, and believe that if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear, but this is ridiculous.

Momasita · 26/11/2018 22:25

The marketed one and it's premise is creepy in my opinion and shite.

We brought our own really cute elf, created our own story for her... And why she was there and did only 4 nights of fun stuff.

easyandy101 · 26/11/2018 22:26

They're shit

This ^^

Elfinablender · 26/11/2018 22:27

Creepy little bastards.

Momasita · 26/11/2018 22:27

PS ours was there to see what the dc liked in case fc couldn't make stuff on the list. The elf was there to get to know humans, to see what dc liked and to do work experience. May see elf again may not.

We have not had a visit since the first time four years ago!

But v tempted to bring her to life again

tor8181 · 26/11/2018 22:32

the concept behind them i think is very wrong, all the be good or im telling santa shit is threatening/scaring children to get your way

Beansandcoffee · 26/11/2018 22:40

Unnecessary. Just adds more expense and pressure to patents. Stick with just Santa.
