Would you keep the money?

I genuinely just am interested in MN responses as to what you should or would do in this kind of situation!

If you found a £20 note on the floor in a supermarket, with no one nearby who it was obviously from, would you pick it up and keep it?

What about if you found it on the ground in the middle of a park, with again no one nearby who it was obviously from?

Just the note alone - it's not part of a wallet or purse!

(It's not really an AIBU is it- AIBU to wonder what you would do?)

If there was no obvious owner around then realistically I would probably keep it and count it as the universe balancing out from when I've dropped money etc out of a pocket before

TheBigBangRocks · 25/11/2018 11:57

Hand it in at the supermarket and to the the police if in the park. If unclaimed I'd then dontate to school for supplies.

Given the current thread in keeping items, I suspect I will be in the minority.

Sausagefingers9 · 25/11/2018 11:57

I’d keep it in the situations you describe. Once it gets to say around £50 and over I’d hand it in.

Sausagefingers9 · 25/11/2018 11:58

In the past I’ve done this and balanced it out by donating half to a charity I like.

PippilottaLongstocking · 25/11/2018 11:59

In the supermarket I’d hand it in to customer services as that’s where the person who lost it would go to find it. Park I’d keep it as there’s no logical place to leave it where the owner would find it and chances are the next person to come past would keep it anyway.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 25/11/2018 11:59

I think I’d be too scared of someone turning back and seeing me pocket it but I’m theory if not obviously someone else’s I’d take it.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 25/11/2018 12:01

I'd keep it.

I wouldn't hand it in at a supermarket. At my local, there was someone fired for pocketing anything like that when it was handed in so put me right off

TealTurnip · 25/11/2018 12:02

I wouldn’t hand it in. Some CF would pocket it. I’d probably tell customer services etc that I’ve found some cash and anyone who can correctly identify the time and amount can contact me to claim it.

SoyDora · 25/11/2018 12:02

This happened to me the other day in a supermarket actually! £15. I handed it in.

CandyCreeper · 25/11/2018 12:03

i wouldnt hesitate to keep it.

easyandy101 · 25/11/2018 12:06

If I ever find money I put it in a charity box if it's not obvious who's it is

Boofay · 25/11/2018 12:07

I found £20 on the ground on a shopping street near me. I went into the two shops near where I found the money and asked if anyone had been in looking for their money. I left my business card in both shops and told them to give it to anyone who might come in saying they'd lost money. If they could then tell me how much they'd lost and in what denomination, I'd return it to them. Posted stuff on Facebook and Twitter, tagging police.
No one claimed it a week later so I gave it to charity.

ToastedSandwichObsession · 25/11/2018 12:11

I'd hand it in. I've been in a position where if I'd dropped £20 then my family wouldn't have eaten that week. My conscience always seems to get the better of me.

Sunisshining5346 · 25/11/2018 12:17

I would put it in a charity collection box..It's not mine to keep

Littlechocola · 25/11/2018 12:17

Hand it in if in supermarket, give to park keeper in park. Put it in charity pot if neither is an option.
It doesn’t belong to me.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 25/11/2018 12:22

Definitely hand it in at the supermarket, park one is a bit harder to call. Supermarkets will have a lost property section and staff would not be allowed to keep it. Any member of staff caught taking it would lose their job.

19lottie82 · 25/11/2018 12:25

Hand it in at the supermarket and to the the police if in the park.

Hand £20 into the police? Surely it would cost the tax payer more that £20 to process it by the time the paperwork was done 😂

AlwaysWantedToBeATenenbaum · 25/11/2018 12:25

I found a £20 floating about a path a few months ago and kept it.

sanpelle · 25/11/2018 12:25

I've found a £10 note and a £5 note before. They were in the road in non-residential areas with no one around so I kept them. I have also lost a £20 note in a shop myself years ago so I kind of see it as the universe giving it back to me. It's hard when it's notes as anyone could claim it's theirs. There's no way they could prove it. If it was found in a store or anywhere with CCTV however then I would hand it in to staff as the owner can be found. I would stay there until they did so to make sure they didn't pocket it for themselves either! The same if I saw some left in a cash machine, it can be proved so I'd just find a staff member or take it to the police.

Shadow1986 · 25/11/2018 12:28

Supermarket - id hand it in.
Park - probably keep it.

bringbackthestripes · 25/11/2018 12:32

I once found money -£30- in the street. I handed it to the local police station. It wasn’t claimed so I did get it back.
Supermarket-I would hand it in to customer service and have them log it.

empmalswa · 25/11/2018 12:33

I found a tenner last week in Sainsbury's, just lying beside the cold ham section.

Handed it straight to customer service desk.

Lovemusic33 · 25/11/2018 12:33

I would hand it in to the supermarket, technically if no one claims it then you should get it.

I thought I had dropped £10 last week and I was really upset as £10 is a lot to me (even more so with Christmas coming up), it turned out I hadn’t dropped it and I was short changed at the till, I got my £10 back but I’m guessing if I had dropped it then it would have been taken.

wallyfeatures · 25/11/2018 12:33

I've kept £10s and £5s if there is no one else around/windy day etc... Once found a £50 at a student bar. The place was heaving with drunk rugby players and there was no way anyone would have had a clue to whom it belonged. I kept that too. I did hand in a bag of weed dropped in the supermarket Grin

empmalswa · 25/11/2018 12:34

I would put it in a charity collection box..It's not mine to keep

It's not yours to give away either Hmm
