To wonder how humans can justify hurting animals?

There isn't much that shocks me these days, but I can't help but be appalled at the level of organised animal cruelty going on in the world.

I saw a horrible video on social media today, shared by an animal welfare group, about the torture animals are going through for fur, medical experiments, or cosmetics. I know they share these things to raise awareness, but it makes me feel so helpless that this is allowed to happen. I actually think it would be better for these animals to just be killed rather than let them suffer for so long.

It's things like this that make me realise how evil (some) humans can be.

Depends what you mean. I am a meat eater. I believe countless lives have been saved by testing medicines on animals before they are tested on humans and also know most people involved with animals in this way treat them well and with respect even they will be their dinner.

Some people treat humans and animals badly but not most of us.

May be just don't watch that kind of video.

Well penicillin is poisonous to guinea pigs, so thank god Fleming didn't test it on them

Animal testing didn't flag up thalidomide. And it hasn't stopped the various deaths in clinical trials, plus severe side-effects such as those in the trials of TGN1412. We were told that SSRIs did not cause withdrawal symptoms, when they did. Basically, if you take a new drug that has not been extensively tested in humans, you are the guinea pig.

People can hurt animals for the same reasons they hurt humans - faulty or no conscience and empathy. That makes them psychopaths or sociopaths, or people with narcissistic or Anti-social personality disorder
