To ask if degree classification brackets change and if so how?

I've just got my final assignment grade and worked out that my overall mark for my degree will be 68% (what I thought was two marks off a 1st), but have been told by a friend that they base it on averages and that brackets can change.
I hadn't heard this before, does anyone know how true it is?

They don't, but we look at anything with in 2% of a boundary, so you would be looked at, and if you had more marks at 70+ than below (preponderance) and /or a 1st in your dissertation, you may well be moved up to a first.

It is true of GCSE & A Level grades but not university.

FatherBuzzCagney · 23/11/2018 18:41

It all depends on your university's academic regulations, which will be available on their website. There's no standardisation across the sector, so what we do at my university may well be completely different from what happens at yours.

FatherBuzzCagney · 23/11/2018 18:43

Sorry, forgot to say that in my institution you can get a 1st with a weighted average of less than 70. So, it's certainly possible that you could get a 1st, depending on what the regs say.

At ours 69.5 is an automatic upgrade to a first.

If you are 68 or above then if you have more than a certain number of 70+ module resilts you will be upgraded as well.

museumum · 23/11/2018 18:50

At the uni I teach for 68 would be considered by a panel but you’d need a certain number of modules at 70+ and the dissertation.

GrainOfSalt · 23/11/2018 18:52

When I was on the exam board individual students were considered if their final percentage was close to a class boundary

Soontobequalified · 23/11/2018 18:57

Ah ok that's positive to know, thank you all

I got a first with 68%. All my final year assignments, and my dissertation, were above 70% so I was awarded the first. Good luck!

LittleKitty1985 · 23/11/2018 22:13

I got 69.6% and it was a 2:1 Sad I queried it and asked if I could do anything to bring it up to a first and they basically said no, it was just a very high 2:1

HappyStar56 · 24/11/2018 00:07

At the open university you would need around 80% for 1st so maybe depends on your university.

Good luck & congratulations!!

It does depend on your university, the course, the faculty, etc. The Award Boards I've sat at took a nice graph of the scores and used that to base the scoring brackets. They then took borderline or outliers, people with extenuating circumstances etc and decided on scoring for them. It was about 6/7 years ago though, so can't say if things have changed since.
