Our dog was going mad in the garden for ages tonight so dh went out with a torch to investigate only to find him playing with a live Crayfish. We didn't know what to do with it so knocked on a few doors only to discover it belonged to ndn who has been catching them at our local country park and putting them in pots and eating them - apparently they are some kind of imported thing that is destroying other things that live in the lake. neighbour came round to collect the crayfish and was going on about them. I wasn't really interested I just wanted it gone. Neighbour then returns half an hour later with cooked crayfish telling us that he had boiled it alive, and even though it was a horrible looking thing pincing away with its pincers in the bucket we caught it in I feel really upset upset that he did this . I mean wtf. I have never eaten crayfish in my life as have always felt it to be cruel. Just feel like he's ruined my sunday evening really. Dog is still going mad convinced its still out there and diving in the bushes and bringing in mud everywhere. AIBU to be upset over this ?

It's kinder to pop them in the freezer so they slip into a deep sleep prior to cooking, or if big enough, a knife through the back of the head? Preferable to boiling alive. Convey this to neighbour?

Yabu. They are an invasive species and it's recommended to catch and kill them as they have virtually eliminated our own population of them.

He WABVVVU to not chill freeze them first. They get rightly stressed out boiling alive - just makes their meat tough and bitter. Blergh Envy

YABU not to bring your dog in the house. I live next door to a very barking dog and it drives me insane.
Did you neighbour say he had not put it in the freezer? Crayfish meat is very healthy.

Babyroobs · 18/11/2018 20:58

The dog wasn't barking it he just wouldn't come in.

No he wouldn't have had time to chill it as he had literally collected it then cam back about 20 minutes later. I will pass on the chilling tips thanks, that sounds a better way of doing it.

Not a nice way to go for the crayfish.

But I don't see it as very different to eating battery eggs or cheap chicken, which can have horrific lives.

funnylittlefloozie · 18/11/2018 21:02

Crayfish are delicious, but yes, they should be killed quickly before cooking. They are also a MASSIVE pest in rivers so well done to your neighbour for clearing some out. Please bring your annoying barky dig back inside. My dog is not allowed to stay out when she barks (and she is a Very Stupid springer, so barks a lot).

Babyroobs · 18/11/2018 21:04

where did I ever say my dog was barking - I've just explained explained above that he wasn't barking just ferreting around in the bushes and wouldn't come in.

Poor crayfish. can see why it ruined your evening.

Humans are the most invasive creature...

festivedramallama · 18/11/2018 21:09

You need permission to trap or fish for crayfish, that said they are delicious but should be killed quickly, we use a knife
