To think I should be able to use this work?

I am a mature student repeating my final year after my mum passed away last year and I didn't feel able to complete the year.

I am repeating the year in full as I got low grades on some work due to the anxiety of my mums illness and caring for her so wanted the chance to do some things again.

Some work however I had did really well in. I have an essay due on Monday from a module I completed last year but am re-taking. However my mark was really very good and the essay question is the same. I assumed I could just add to it to make it better. My tutor said he thought that would be fine. Assessments have said I cannot submit the same work.
Now I get that if I was submitting the same work again and the grade from last time still counted. That's standard. But that grade is not on my transcript, last year does not count I am retaking the year In full. So why can't I use my own work again. I don't think I can do it any better from scratch and it's a silly and time consuming thing to do, even my tutor was a bit Hmm

I’m sorry to hear about your mother.

It does seem a bit odd, but if those are the rules then you’re just going to have to follow them in order to get through. It sounds like it’s to create a level playing field for everyone taking the course.

Universities have very strict rules on academic integrity, and honestly I’d say it’s not worth jeopardising your degree for. You clearly understand the topic very well in order to get good grades, so why not try and improve upon it?

Resubmit and put your own essay in the references. Job done!

This can be because of plagiarism. It might not pass the turnitin automatic plagiarism 'detector.' It's worth talking to your academic office about this. Hwr if I were you I'd look at your essay and work out how you could improve it. Uni shouldn't be all about the marks but ultimately all about your learning.

No I definitely wanted to improve on it, but it was insinuating that I can't use it as a base to work from! So if there was a paragraph I don't want to change at all for example what then sort of thing.

That s absurd. Its your work to do with as you wish. Use it, rewrite some paras. However, if you don't get an equivalent mark just suck it up, dont say I got an A last time. Wouldn't go down well at all.

As long as you reference the original, in that case, you should be fine.
