The number of times he's set things on fire should be a red flag on its own, throw in the casual bullying of all his friends, taking fire service vehicles with apparent impugnity, he's just been allowed to cause misery to all the other residents of Pontypandy for too long.

I have come to the conclusion that Pontypandy fire station was due to close and they drew straws for who had to "visit" Dilys and thus create guaranteed job safety for life. Sam obviously drew the short straw given the red hair.

Why don't they ever ring any other emergency services either it's always just call fireman Sam, no police or ambulance seem to exist.
