AIBU to think I should say nothing about gift problem

Dd was given a lovely bday gift, a craft kit from well known craft and hobby store. Obvs brand new as the cardboard sleeve around the kit was intact. When she opened it, most of the contents were missing so a dud kit. I don’t want to tell the giver as I think she would be mortified, having clearly gone to trouble and expense to get a lovely gift and it’s not her fault it’s empty! Could I take it back to the shop even tho I didn’t buy it?

I think you should tell the person who gave it to her .

Yes of course. If, when you get there you see the boxes were wrapped in plastic then you will know it was bought and opened. If not you politely explain and ask for a replacement.

Go back to the store and explain.

Is it from the stores own brand? If so, I would take it to the shop. I'm sure they'll replace it. Might be tricky if it's a brand available elsewhere e.g. crayola

It is the stores own brand, and definitely no way it could have been opened prior to us getting it. I’ll take it into the shop tomorrow and see what their customer service is like!

I would take it back to the shop and tell them. If it's the well-known craft and hobby store, their customer service is good.
