Birthday present too small - what should i do?

It was my birthday last week and my OH said that he would get me a new coat as I mentioned i was going to buy one myself. I went out and tried on a few coats and sent him pictures and then he chose one of them and kept it a surprise.

When i opened it, i found the coat was too small for me. He said i always shop in petite so he didnt see why i wouldnt be have a petite coat. I only shop petite for trousers and he never asked me for a size for the coat. It was from Next, bought online and hes thrown away the paper reciet that comes with it. He said it had the price on it(but i already know the price because i chose it). I went in today to pick up a parcel for dd (forgot to take the coat with me) and i saw another coat I quite liked, though it cost a little bit more. OH said he doesnt mind if i get that one.

Would Next let me exchange an online bought coat for an instore coat without the receipt? And if not, should I ask OH if he could buy me the second coat? But that would mean hes bought two. My current one is falling apart.

Eh? If he bought it online he can just log in and request a return? Am I missing something obvious?

Petalflowers · 13/11/2018 21:52

Probably would let you change it. Explain it’s a present. If you can show a bank statement with the payment, that my help.

OwlinaTree · 13/11/2018 21:52

If it's brand new with the labels on its definitely worth a try.

Forgot to say, i couldnt see the coat he’s already bought me in the shop to exchange with

Sometimes they have things in the directory that aren’t stocked in the store, if it’s still got tags etc on they should exchange it

Clumsymumsy27 · 13/11/2018 21:55

Ive gone to return things before and they wouldn’t accept without the paper reciept. OH sent me the confirmation email, ill show them that and explain it was a present and see if that helps. Id be happy to pay the difference between the coats

Just take it into the shop for an exchange.

Theboldandthebeautiful1 · 13/11/2018 21:57

Next are really good.. you won’t need a receipt to exchange as long as it still has the tag attached.

If he bought it via a Next directory account he can just arrange for a return or take back to a store. All of the information they need will be on the tag, no receipt required.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 13/11/2018 22:00

You don't need a receipt for an exchange. You can just pay the difference

FoodGloriousFud · 13/11/2018 22:49

As long as it has the pos ticket attached then you'll be able to exchange. Each item has its own unique code so your husband's details will be attached to it.

I’ve taken online stuff back to the shop before in the delivery bag it came in and the chap scanned the barcode on the delivery bag. It had all my details on there with the details of the order and I didn’t need a receipt or anything. I was very impressed. Grin

Junkmail · 14/11/2018 00:01

It not really a full return you need though—only store credit towards the other coat. If the item you’re returning is current season, brand new with tags on there shouldn’t be a problem with giving you the store credit. And of course, if your OH bought it online there will be a digital receipt too.
