Ryan Air Flight - Was the Cabin Crew Member in the wrong?

Witchofzog · 13/11/2018 20:02

I was sat next to a man who ordered a meal and paid with his card. They initially tried to give his meal to the wrong seat but eventually got it right.

About 10 mins later when he was half way through eating another member of cabin crew asked him for payment. He stated he had already paid and the other member of cabin crew confirmed this (after both quibbling next to my head for 5 mins). However the Cabin Crew Member who asked for payment came back to the man and said it wasn't on the system and he needed to pay it again as it hadn't gone through. He refused saying he would call his bank on landing and if he hadn't paid he would then pay but would not be paying twice.

This woman would not leave it alone. She stood over him (and me) for over 10 mins arguing the case, insisting he pay, saying he should not expect to eat for free and saying if he didn't pay they would take it out of her wages.

To be honest she was rude and unprofessional but at the same time the whole cabin crew looked stressed and unhappy and I wasn't aware the crew would be treated so badly that their wage would be deducted for a non payment.

So I think she was unreasonable but at the same time must be treated appallingly by Ryan Air to behave this way in the first place.

ITS RYANAIR SAY NO MORE

clockworklime · 13/11/2018 20:05

Pay peanuts, get monkeys

Witchofzog · 13/11/2018 20:09

I should have put a Ryan Air disclaimer before I posted. Yes it was Ryan Air. No I will not be travelling with them again as they were utterly shit. I just wondered if anyone knew if this was the actual policy with them?

Did he end up paying again? It does sound very unprofessional of them to go on about it like that

Birdsgottafly · 13/11/2018 20:13

"Pay peanuts, get monkeys"

Just go ahead and insult every decent hardworking low wage worker.

OP it's a way of insuring Staff do their job correctly.

In shops you are often responsible for taking a counterfeit note. Someone leaving without paying the Bill etc.

It comes on the back of so many people giving freebees to their mates, or pocketing the cash.

Caselgarcia · 13/11/2018 20:15

Very unprofessional. And certainly not appropriate to tell him it would come out of her wages if it hadn't gone through. Not his problem

BarbarianMum · 13/11/2018 20:16

It wouldn't surprise me that Ryan Air is so shit that they'd charge staff in this sort of situation. But I dont blame the guy for not wanting to pay again as it wouldnt surprise me if they regularly double-charge customers either.

The answer for the staff is to unionise and demand better conditions. The answer for customers is to pick a better airline.

AmIRightOrAMeringue · 13/11/2018 20:16

In shops they normally print out the receipt to show you it hasn't gone through...assuming this wasn't an option, they obviously had some way of knowing it hadn't gone through so surely they could just have showed him their system or whatever

BarbarianMum · 13/11/2018 20:18

Actually i think it's perfectly find for RyanAir staff to tell their customers how badly they are being treated to save them some money.

Blanchedupetitpois · 13/11/2018 20:20

Unprofessional of her, but Ryanair are evil fucks if their policy is to take things like this out of staff wages.

Witchofzog · 13/11/2018 20:24

She was leaning over me reading every transaction from her machine to show him that his was not on there. The other cabin crew had already said she didn't believe the machines had synchronised properly. The poor guy just wanted to eat his lunch in peace. To be fair she was annoying me too. But she seemed overly stressed by it and I kind of felt bad for her too

OP posts:
Witchofzog · 13/11/2018 20:26

Ps no they do not provide receipts

OP posts:
YellowStickies · 13/11/2018 20:29

What happened next? Did he pay again?

ForalltheSaints · 13/11/2018 20:29

The OP and the man who were on the plane were unreasonable for flying Ryanair in the first place. At least the OP is not going to travel with them again, which is having some self-respect.

maddiemookins16mum · 13/11/2018 20:32

If the in-flight tally for food and beverages sold did not add up at the end of the flight they get all kinds of grief. But no excuse for rudeness.

Unfinishedkitchen · 13/11/2018 20:34

I don’t blame him for not paying again. I guarantee it would be murder trying to get his money back if he did pay twice.

Witchofzog · 13/11/2018 20:35

I don't know what happenned in the end as he was still on the plane when I left. When I went to the toilet about 20 mins before landing she was still chuntering about it to anyone who would listen. It was just really uncomfortable all round

I hate Ryan Air. However we often use them as there are 6 of us in our family and flights to Majorca with Ryan Air saves us nearly £1600 against any other airline. If there was only 2 or 3 of us we would pay the extra but can’t justify paying so much more for less than 2hr flights

Witchofzog · 13/11/2018 20:37

She kept saying to him that if he had paid twice he could just get it back and because no because his bank would just refer him to them and based on his current experience he did not hold out much hope. He had a point to be fair

Ryan air staff are constantly over stretched and stressed, it's a dreadful company to work for.

Star81 · 13/11/2018 20:39

They do provide receipts they are emailed to you as your email is linked to your seat number.

CaliHummers · 13/11/2018 20:39

I got called back to a garage to pay for something cheap (not petrol!) that I'd pay for by card but it hadn't gone through. Didn't occur to me to quibble as they had no reason to lie, I just paid again. Did check my online banking when I got home and it had indeed only been paid once.

It sometimes happens that a payment doesn't clear. If she was showing him all the payments on her machine and his wasn't there he was rather rude not to just pay again. Ryan Air are shit and known for treating staff badly. She may not have handled it well but they must have to cope with huge stresses.

FlamingGalar · 13/11/2018 20:41

It sounds horrendous for all involved to be honest.

The last time I flew with Ryan Air we had a three hour delay on the tarmac. Dh and I got talking to the air stewardesses as we were in the front row and they told us they don't get paid for the hours the plane is delayed, but are expected to complete the number flights they are scheduled onto. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if the company docked staff wages for stock discrepancies. Ryan Air is just shit all round

EdWinchester · 13/11/2018 20:42

Gah. I hate Ryan Air and their surly, miserable staff.

TidaQuel · 13/11/2018 20:48

Yep, Ryan Air are awful and the crew will have their pay docked if the bar is down. Agreed it sounds like it was handled badly but Ryan air treat their crew appallingly. They are likely to be in fear of their jobs. And yes, they’ll only be paid for the time the aircraft is moving - all the time on the ground is free labour.
