That is not ‘your’ gym space!

Thought I’d try a new class at my gym this morning - it’s normally full but I managed to get on as someone cancelled. I got there a bit early, spoke to the instructor and then found a space waiting for class to start. Just as the class was due to start a woman came in, dumped her jumper, purse etc on top of my things then stood about an inch away from where I was! I didn’t say anything but just moved away from her so that we wouldn’t be hitting each other in the face.

A bit later there was floor work with mats so I got my mat and put it down in a free spot. This woman then comes with her mat and puts it right next to mine even though there was plenty of space! I did give her a bit of a WTF look but again, I ended up moving my mat away from hers. At the end she was faffing getting her stuff together but I just barged in to grab my keys, phone etc from under her things.

AIBU to think that there are no ‘reserved’ spaces. I pay my gym membership and can stand where I like - it’s first come first served.

You need to challenge that behaviour. You let her treat you like shit.

ZigZagIntoTheBlue · 13/11/2018 10:58

You shouldn't have moved! Just asked calmly 'can I help you? We might have more space if you moved up a touch?'

There are no reserved spaces, but people are creatures of habit and like their routines. This happened to me a few weeks ago at one of my regular classes - other person wasn't new, which kind of made it worse as she just moved into "my" space. I didn't react in any way, just found a space in another part of the room, but the instructor looked across and said "what are you doing over there?" Turned out he likes everyone in their usual place too Grin.
YANBU.

Thanks folks - don’t think I’ll bother with this class again. Far too cliquey! I think I’ll just stick to my usual class - they are a lovely bunch!

You dislike the whole class of people because of one person’s behaviour?

There is a woman like this in my class, it’s weird!

Canshopwillshop · 13/11/2018 11:12

No loopy - I just generally didn’t like the whole feel of the class either. I’m normally very easy going but I didn’t feel comfortable at all.

Didn't the instructor say anything?

midsomermurderess · 13/11/2018 11:34

Just normal human territoriality. Prattish, but there you go.

MatildaTheCat · 13/11/2018 11:38

I joined a new, very small class earlier this year and I very meekly asked the other ladies where they would like me to go. At first they were quite reserved with me but now they get my mat ready and chat very nicely!

People really do get attached to ‘their’ space in a class but this woman was plain old rude. IME gym instructors don’t get involved in these spats and frankly I don’t blame them.

Canshopwillshop · 13/11/2018 11:47

UPstart - the instructor didn’t notice. It was quite busy.

I would have asked her what she was doing tbh.
