To have had an Indian buffet (pregnant)?

AliceRR · 05/11/2018 21:48

DH wanted Indian food for dinner and then suggested a buffet restaurant we’ve been to before a few times.

I agreed although it then occurred to em maybe I shouldn’t eat buffet food just because of the risk of food poisoning given the food including meats are left out etc.

I had salad and meats, chips and popodoms(!), and pudding...

Also I ate a piece of masala fish and DH commented he was surprised I’d eaten that as fish can be dodgy!

I am an anxious / cautious pregnant person so now worrying maybe I should have stayed away from the buffet and ordered from the main menu...

People in India do eat you know.

sonandhelpneeded · 05/11/2018 21:51

Did you get food poisoning? I presume not, so you are fine!

GabriellaMontez · 05/11/2018 21:53

Anything can be dodgy. Do you feel ok?

AliceRR · 05/11/2018 21:53

@vanillasky1001 It’s not the fact it was Indian, it’s more the fact it was a buffet and the food is left out for who knows how long and not at a controlled temp etc

@sonandhelpneeded No sign of food poisoning but it was only a couple of hours ago so not sure how long it would take.

I’m probably being silly aren’t I 🙄

I’d rather be silly and safe though!

@GabriellaMontez I feel ok. I thought I was feeling slightly sick but I have been feeling a bit sick / queasy on and off last few days (don’t know if it’s pregnancy related or not) but could be in my head

HarrietKettleWasHere · 05/11/2018 21:55

Well you’ve eaten it now Confused

So what do you us to suggest?!

Petitepamplemousse · 05/11/2018 21:56

OP just wants reassurance, why the snarky comments? OP I am sure you’ll be absolutely fine. Your DP’s comments sound unhelpful.

GabriellaMontez · 05/11/2018 21:57

I think you'll be fine. Loads of people go to buffets and have no problem.

AliceRR · 05/11/2018 21:59

Yes I think I just wanted a bit of reassurance! I know I’m probably being over the top.

DP comments were not helpful but think he realised after he’d said it that he might have set me off!

Thank you

You will live - you'd know by now if you weren't okay. I cant think that buffets are inherently dangerous.

Winegumaddict · 05/11/2018 21:59

If you've been a few times and not been unwell before they must have reasonable food hygiene practises. You will be fine stop worrying.

Goodness, the answers here when she’s already said she’s a bit anxious.

OP, uou’ll be fine. If it’s a reputable restaurant that you trust normally, even more so. There’s a lot of cautious advice given when you are pregnant and it can make you feel more anxious.

IF you do feel unwell at any time, watch your hydration levels and nip to the GP if you are worried.

Well I think the 'buffet' is nothing to worry about! But I had a curry the night before both DS's were born! So watch out for the arrival of a mini you, sooner than you might have thought!! Wink

Greensleeves · 05/11/2018 22:00

I've never been ill from a buffet, I think people do worry too much about them. Try not to stress yourself out about it.

On a side note, I got campylobacter when I was pregnant with ds2 (not from a buffet!). It's the sickest I've ever been, I really thought I was going to die. No ill effects whatsoever on the pregnancy or ds2, who is now 14 and scowling at me for having the temerity to listen to my own choice of music in my own living room Grin

TreesAr3Green · 05/11/2018 22:02

I'm sure you will be fine, I ate at buffet restaurants a few times with both pregnancies and had no issues. It wasn't something my midwife had warned me about. You can always ask your midwife at your next appointment so you know for next time.

AliceRR · 05/11/2018 22:03

Yes it’s somewhere I’ve been quite a few times before so trusted it more than an unknown

@TheFantasticFixit Thanks for the tip!

@SpookyTeaBag Hopefully not yet as I’m only 26 weeks but I’ll remember that for later on when I’m getting impatient!

Buffet restaurants will have to conform to food hygiene rules just as much as any other kind of restaurant. You just need to stick to the usual rules about food in pregnancy, as per the NHS website. Nothing you've described eating should be a problem.

polkadotpixie · 05/11/2018 22:05

You'll be absolutely fine! 😊

I had quite a few Indian buffets when I was pregnant with no issues (although I am a vegetarian which massively reduces the risk of food poisoning of course)

Try not to worry!

Dontfartbackinanger · 05/11/2018 22:06

I know how you feel OP! But you know, this is anxiety talking and it’s not really rational. You’ll be fine. The more serious food poisoning is the quicker it sets in after you’ve eaten. So, with ever hour that passes you can comfort yourself that it’s ok!

Ceecee18 · 05/11/2018 22:07

I had quite a few buffets of different cuisines when pregnant. Didn't even occur to me that it could be a problem.

AliceRR · 05/11/2018 22:07

@Greensleeves Had to google what that was!! I’ve heard of people getting food poisoning and be fine though

@TreesAre3Green @assassinatedbeauty
I haven’t heard of anything specific but nhs does talk about food being piping hot and refrigeration etc. I know I’m a bit paranoid!

Well I feel a bit better given you haven’t all told me I’m utterly irresponsible for basically eating meat and fish from a buffet

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 05/11/2018 22:09

If it’s a place you have eaten at before and trust their hygiene then I really wouldn’t worry.
An unknown place with a dodgy hygiene rating and dirty plates? I would pass.
I’m sure you will be fine.
But DH can cook for a week for making the insensitive fish comment. Grin

Ontheboardwalk · 05/11/2018 22:11

Ah if you’ve been there before and been fine then you'll be right.

I have dodgy stomach and worry about going to new places incase I get ill. Once I’ve been there and gone go back I chill out and eat everything.

Rudgie47 · 05/11/2018 22:27

Last time I had buffet food I got food poisoning and I wont be having anything else from one. I was horrendus, I was being sick into my hands at the same time as being on the loo.
Sounds like your o.k OP, but I'd knock buffets on the head. Food can be out for days on end and just topped up.
