To just want to buy a door??!!

We are currently after a new front door. I've wanted one for ages and have the exact one in mind. We've saved a decent amount of money and are good to go. This should be a pleasurable experience. However, getting a simply quote for a door is next to impossible. We've just had the benefit of a window company for 1 hour- quoting £4000 initially then dropping the price "as we're really nice people and he really wants to do this for us" by £3000!
AIBU to just want an honest quote from honest people who I can feel comfortable about giving my money to?

We are in the same position however I'm having trouble getting someone to fit a security door as we've previously had people try and kick our door hence why needs replacing. I can find companies who manifacture a door just not the fitting.

However if you are getting a simply upvc door 3k is way too much

skunkatanka · 29/10/2018 20:53

It was a composite door. All about the "if you buy it now you can have a £4000 door for just £1000. Said no and sent him on his way.

I just want honesty! A website that gives prices without needing a bloody home visit would be nice too!!

We're buying a composite door and £1000 is the going price.....upvc is cheaper.

jellyandsoup · 29/10/2018 20:56

Thats really expensive! We have just orderd a new composite door with side panel for 1300 including fitting! From a local glazing company.

Accountant222 · 29/10/2018 20:58

I've just had two fitted £1k each

Yorkshirepudding1987 · 29/10/2018 20:59

We just got a new composite door for £290 from a warehouse for mismeasures and over orders. It was then sprayed to the colour we wanted privately. DP fit the door. Think the handle cost £15 and it came with a lock and 3 keys.

Valkarie · 29/10/2018 21:01

I paid 900 for a composite door and fitting. Was probably 4 years ago. I just typed in door fitter to one of those recommend a tradesperson sites. No way I could have afforded £3k

Whatsmyname14 · 29/10/2018 21:02

We got a really nice Rock door for £1500 fitted. It was awesome. So sad when we moved and had to leave it behind.

GrumpySausage · 29/10/2018 21:05

We had this OP. Safestyle came and quoted us a ridiculous amount for back door and bay window. Within 10 minutes he'd done some number crunching and knocked £500 off. He then tried to convince me to pay it when my dh was out of room, used the whole 'I can see you want good quality for your family and like them to be safe' angle but I was having none of it. Then he 'rang his boss' who miraculously is the only bloke in the whole of the UK who can give us this deal and knocked off another grand. We still said no as by this point he had been here over two hours and he was pissing me off.

We rang needhams instead and they came, measured, showed us some doors and gave one really decent price. Would highly recommend them.

Wetdressinggownsleeve · 29/10/2018 21:07

Total rip off!

When I worked for a company that produced composite doors (avg. £400 - £800 for non trade customers) we sold them through Travis Perkins, try there? They can probably recommend a fitter too.

Whyiseveryonesoangry · 29/10/2018 21:07

Go direct to a manufacturer and ask them to recommend a fitter in your area.
Pay the manufacturer for the door and the fitter for fitting it. Works out cheaper (usually).
I work in a company that supplies to trade only, but we will take an order from the end user providing they pay in full with order and we are more than happy to give names of fitters in their area.

updownleftrightstart · 29/10/2018 21:08

Where are you based op?

Queenofthebrae · 29/10/2018 21:10

We found a really reliable place online when we replaced ours this year. Really reasonably priced too. If you're in Scotland try these guys www.we-do-doors.co.uk/

IHeartMarmiteToast · 29/10/2018 21:11

We had a new conservatory. Had 2 big brands come over.... whole speil bla bla bla were there for hours. One local co came over he measured and left. Saying I'll send you the quote byeeeeee. Guess who we chose....

Cumbria. To be honest I'd pay £1000 but I was just annoyed that he'd knocked £3000 off the original "price" which clearly was never a price at all!! And of course it was a one day only offer. We too had the spiel about how it was safe and secure and the weather was going to be awful this year etc etc. He too had to ring his "boss" for this one time only offer.
We live on a private road in a tiny village with no through traffic but he could knock £500 if we put a board outside advertising the company (for the local cats)

I paid £900 for a composite front door and french doors at the back - mates rates that is. But it just goes to show that £3k is OUTRAGEOUS.

Please ignore the big brands and their hard sell tactics. I think ours came from Distinction Doors.

skunkatanka · 29/10/2018 21:13

Definitely going to talk to a local firm tomorrow. I'd pay more for a reduction in bull shit to be honest....

Hidillyho · 29/10/2018 21:17

Was it Anglian by any chance?
We needed our windows done a few years ago (and it was obvious we did) and they didn’t stop hounding us.

It should be something that a local carpenter should be able to do

Screamqueenz · 29/10/2018 21:18

If you go to Distinction Doors (manufacturer) they will point you in the direction of a good fabricator / fitter.

Fruitbatdancer · 29/10/2018 21:19

lol I hear you. We wanted bi-fold doors. Quotes from usual suspects varied from 4000 to 9000 originally! They sunk to 2300 - 6000 when we didn't bite their hands off. Ludicrous these sales techniques. Ended up going for the one with less BS and an actual 10 year gaurantee.
Just give me a bloody price!!!!

happinessiseggshaped · 29/10/2018 21:20

We paid slightly over the odds for our composite door, but to a local company that regularly donates money to my sons's school so I don't feel so bad about it! And he didn't waste ages on the sales pitch - just told me the price.

ghostyslovesheets · 29/10/2018 21:21

I had mine done last year - through a small one man door business - cost £850 (basic black composite door) - £4000 is crazy!

IloveJudgeJudy · 29/10/2018 21:24

We used a local company that was recommended to us. We got a quote for new windows at the same time. There was no discount, apart from a small one as we were having so much work done. The price was the price. It was such a refreshing experience. We are in Kent so would pm you if that's near you.

dementedpixie · 29/10/2018 21:28

Have also used the we do doors website for our composite door with catflap
