to ask for your help in getting my heating to work?

I'm in a rental property, we moved in at the beginning of the year and when we moved in we couldn't get the heating to work, we contacted the letting agents who sent someone to check the boiler and said it was fine.

I've read through the manuals, read endless forums online and just can't seem to get it to work. My radiators are turned up, I've turned the knob to " on ", I don't get what I'm doing wrong? The hot water works fine, a amber light comes up when the hot water is running but stops once I turn the tap off.

Please help as I'm absolutely freezing!

I should add that the contractors who came round turned the heating on but didn't show me how and that I have tried turning the boiler off and on again

Are there thermostats in some of the rooms (living room/master bedroom) and what temperature are they set at?

Paperplain · 28/10/2018 01:00

Maybe the timer is in or not set to the times you want it on? That's the most likely I think.

Twofurrycats · 28/10/2018 01:03

Is there a wireless unit somewhere? The check the battery if there is.

eloliphant · 28/10/2018 01:06

@Devillanelle thermostat in the hallway is at 20 degrees

@Paperplain I've got it on the always on setting rather than the timing setting but perhaps if I set the times I want it'll work anyway

Use Google to pull up the user's manual.

sebashocked · 28/10/2018 01:12

Have you tried changing the batteries in the thermostat?

eloliphant · 28/10/2018 01:13

@Aquamarine1029 I've got the user manual in front of me but it's useless, I've followed the instructions on how to turn the heating on, there's no error codes or anything showing

I might be being thick, but turn the heating knob to the same position as the water knob

mumsastudent · 28/10/2018 01:23

Aha! on clock on right hand side there are "pins" which can be gently pushed into towards the centre when they are in the ch is on (I think!) you push these in on the time frame you want the ch to be on - (we had one of these in the past

mumsastudent · 28/10/2018 01:25

& turn the thermostat up a bit to 21

Iamtheoneandonly2018 · 28/10/2018 01:27

I used to have this boiler does it show any fault codes on the display? Mine used to show F22 which meant no pressure. I fixed this by using the taps underneath to add more pressure. Eventually I had to get a new boiler though.....

Iamtheoneandonly2018 · 28/10/2018 01:29

FWIW I had to turn my thermostat up to 30 before the radiators came on

WitchTyler · 28/10/2018 04:52

The dial in the lower right-hand corner, next to the switch - what is it showing? I'm guessing it says "bar" - is the pointer at less than 1?

balalalala · 28/10/2018 06:48

We have the same boiler. What happens if you press the i button? With your thermostat does it work off batteries? If ours are running low then it all still looks fine but the boiler doesn't pick up the signal. I replace the batteries and the boiler fires up!

thomasthecheekyone · 28/10/2018 06:56

The thermostat should click when you turn it. Make sure it's at a temp above the click. Move all those pins in a circle to be same position and see if it comes on. If it doesn't move all to the opposite position.

ShellsBells76 · 28/10/2018 07:04

Valiant boilers will show an F code if there is a fault.
Pressure is ok, change the batteries in the thermostat, if that's showing 20 that's the temp inside your house so unless you have set the temp to above that it won't come on so whack it up and see if it works. If the radiators have their own thermostats make sure they are up.
If it still doesn't work you can turn the boiler off and on again that can reset it.

Believeitornot · 28/10/2018 07:09

We had this boiler. First of all try turning the radiator knob to the same as the hot water.
Second - check the radiators themselves. Are they all on the highest?
Third - the tiny little things around the clock dictate when the heating comes on or off (effectively your timer)
When you turn the thermostat - can you hear a click? That will tell you what the temperature is.

Lycrasock · 28/10/2018 07:09

Most likely the pins on that timer dial at front of boiler.

eloliphant · 28/10/2018 07:11

Thank you all so much! I turned the thermostat up and the radiators came on!

What a muppet, I've been shivering in bed every night
