Forgot to put bins out. Recycling is overflowing and we only have collections every 3 weeks... help?! Never forgotten before. How do I get my bin empty without paying for it?

If you have access to a car, take it round to your nearest recycling centre. They're usually open 7 days a week.

Take it to the tip yourself.

If youve 'just' missed them you can try ringing the council and ask the bin lorry come back. Ours do it I don't know about anywhere else though.

Mumof1DS · 19/10/2018 10:16

Take it to the tip yourself if the lorry has already been. Are you on friendly terms with a neighbour? Can you text them and ask them to put it out if the lorry hasn't already been?
Put in your diary/to do list for next time and put it out the night before.

You should be able to recycle some stuff at your local supermarket, eg) glass, card etc.

Put your postcode in this website. It'll help you find where accepts what, eg my local Sainsbury's takes loads but my local Tesco doesn't.

Set an alarm the night before Grin I've started doing this after I had to run outside with our non-recycling bin in my PJs with bed hair as the lorry was approaching our house. Ours is collected fortnightly but as it was the main bin with nappies in, it would have been gross.

I also got the council to send me a second recycling bin. We usually fill ours fully in the two weeks so I rang them and asked for another one. Luckily we have space for four wheelie bins! Useful for when I have forgotten to put the recycling out or over Christmas/birthdays when there's lots more cardboard. However, they couldn't just send me a second bin (no charge although I was happy to pay, their system didn't seem to cope with someone wanting to do more recycling!), I eventually just had to say it disappeared after collection day.

Lazypuppy · 19/10/2018 10:24

Another one saying take it to the tip.

Also, can't believe your recycling is only collected every 3 weeks! Our bins are every 2 weeks, but recycling is every weem

amawaster · 19/10/2018 10:35

Speak to your Council & see if they will provide you with extra bags or agree to collect waste from the side of your bin next collection day. Ask a neighbour if they have space in their bin. Squash boxes & bottles to make sure they're not full of air. Take any bulky boxes etc to the recycling centre.

Poppyfr33 · 19/10/2018 10:39

Used to work for a council. If customer rang early enough to let us know they had forgotten to put out bin, if bin lorry still in area they would go back and empty. It’s always worth a call.

VanGoghsDog · 19/10/2018 10:51

We are allowed extra bags which we get from the parish council, so you could get those and use it to at least store the recycling if you can't get to the tip, but I'd go to the tip with the bulk of it.

They have to be those specific bags though, they won't take any old bags/black bin bags etc.

Dawsonforehead · 19/10/2018 10:58

Our solution is much more primitive than the above more sensible suggestions...DH climbs in and jumps on it, manages to crush it all to 50%! If you are prepared to dig in to the bin unfold any cereal boxes or large packaging to flatten it.

Obviously you don't want to be doing this every time but as a one off it usually gets us to the next 2 weeks. Alternatively if you have nice neighbours with larger bins or who live alone ask them nicely if you could fill their bin just this once before the next collection (obviously only if they haven't already filled it!)

Mercedes519 · 19/10/2018 10:59

We can report a missed bin collection within 24 hours and they come back. Do check.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 19/10/2018 11:00

Take it to the nearest tip...?

PinkHeart5914 · 19/10/2018 11:01

Supermarkets normally have some recycling the one nearest me has plastic, paper/card, tin cans (ie beer, food cans) and glass.

So check out your latest supermarket and drive it there?

Could try calling the council? If your very very lucky and the bin lorry is still around they may send it back

Oysterbabe · 19/10/2018 11:02

Drive to the tip.
