To hate having workmen in the house

Not because I think they will use my toilet.

I just feel really uncomfortable when there is someone in the house. There is a man fixing the boiler at the moment - I have made him a brew and now I am hiding in the front room with the dog in case he asks me any questions beyond 'is it working?'

It's the awkwardness of getting on with your own thing but potentially having to make small talk. Urgh.

I had this when DD was weeks old and I was still establishing breastfeeding. Awkward to say the least.

You're not being unreasonable. I really dislike having strangers in my home.

MacosieAsunter · 18/10/2018 09:13

I suppose you could learn and qualify to do the jobs yourself?

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 18/10/2018 09:16

Yes I agree, but there isn't an alternative if something needs doing.

SlB09 · 18/10/2018 09:16

Think everyone has this. Weve had loads recently and I do the obligatory do you want a cuppa? Then say right, ill get on just shout if you need me for anything just let yourself in & out - this seems to work for me!

Chelseajunior · 18/10/2018 09:18

It's annoying but unavoidable,
I expect he hates being in your house too and rather be in his own house Smile

elliejjtiny · 18/10/2018 09:31

Me too. I have dc with SN who like to "help", try to escape and put things in their mouths. Workmen always seem to leave doors and stairgates open.

tiggerkid · 18/10/2018 09:44

Don't like having workmen in the house but over the years kind of gotten used to them. I am sure they don't like being in my house any more than I like having them around, so I just offer them tea/coffee or whatever and let them get on with it while I do my own stuff.

borderline11 · 18/10/2018 09:50

I’m the same, the relief when they go.

sueelleker · 18/10/2018 09:54

Me too; my husband's retired, so I like to be at work, and come home to find the job done. We're having a home lift and new windows installed shortly, so I'm very glad I don't have to be around.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 18/10/2018 10:05

I know what you mean, OP. I find it hard to relax when there are strangers in the house.

QuiVivraVerra · 18/10/2018 10:14

YANBU. I don't even like it when my FIL is here doing jobs for us let alone builders!
