I think you're being a bit unreasonable even thinking about this. Who cares which appliances she has?

AuntBeastie · 16/10/2018 11:29

Surely there is more quality variation in a washing machine than a fridge? I’d definitely spend more money on the former.

DoYouLikeHueyLewisandTheNews · 16/10/2018 11:31

I have a cheap fridge freezer, a second hand second freezer and a Bosch washing machine. I think there's more variance in what a decent washing machine can do compared to a fridge or freezer.

She'll surely be able to take both with her when she moves anyway so does it matter?

BiscuitsAndGravy · 16/10/2018 11:31

No I'd want a nice washing machine. Also why are you so invested in your friend's life that you're posting about it on the internet?

Thenewdoctor · 16/10/2018 11:32

Why is this your business?

DawgLover · 16/10/2018 11:32

I'd spend the money on the washing machine to get honest. As long as the fridge/freezer meets my basic requirements (temperature/space/light) I'm happy whereas the extra features a good washing machine has make a big difference to me

Housingcraze · 16/10/2018 12:37

She wishes for my opinion

OP posts:
showmethemonkey · 16/10/2018 12:39

Is she renting out the flat or renting it herself to live in?

Housingcraze · 16/10/2018 12:50

Renting for a tenant to move in? So she can save rent up to get more expensive replaced when she plans to move in 2:3 years time.

After living in rentals with shitty excuses for white goods I’d be ecstatic at seeing a nice washing machine. Would make time think the landlord was an actual human rather than just a money grabbing arsehole.

Just cos it’s in a rental doesn’t mean it has to be cheap shite.

FrankIncensed · 16/10/2018 13:02

I would argue that a washing machine gets more heavy usage and has more moving parts therefore a cheap washing machine will break down more often than a cheap fridge. But very happy to be corrected by someone who actually knows something about it!

IStandWithPosie · 16/10/2018 13:05

Fridges just sit there and stay cold. They last for years and years. Very little wear and tear, very little to go wrong. Fine to go cheaper. Washing machines get serious abuse, lots of potential for repairs. Much better to go for quality to stretch out the time between having to replace.

DidIEatThat · 16/10/2018 13:06

I have a cheap fridge and freezer. I bought them off fb. They were 3 months old unused curry essentials and I paid 60 quid. Even if I bought properly new I would have probably have only bought the next one up.
Washing machine wise...I'm having issues at the moment anyway. But I'd want mid-range realistically. There's much more parts and functions and I want a reliable machine. Either a fridge is working or it's not. Unless you are really fond of water dispensers etc. I'd certainly look to pay more on a washing machine.

IStandWithPosie · 16/10/2018 13:06

Your friend is letting, not renting.

Thenewdoctor · 16/10/2018 13:06

Your friend is letting her own property? Or is she renting a property from a landlord?

Stonebake · 16/10/2018 13:07

I think your friend is right to spend money on a washing machine. If she puts in a crap one which doesn’t spin properly and starts gathering mould then her flat could be damaged. Fridges don’t have as much wear and tear as they just sit there, so less to go wrong I imagine.

Housingcraze · 16/10/2018 13:10

She is letting the property out to a tenant.

Cheap washing machine is a false economy. It will break. Bosch tend to be more reliable.

A fridge is just a fridge.

BarbaraofSevillle · 16/10/2018 13:15

Maybe the Bosch was good value/not expensive. Our dishwasher is a Bosch and it was £250 brand new. It's quite a basic model, but it was the cheapest available except own brand/Beko etc, which may be fine, but I thought it was worth paying a few quid more for Bosch.

Clandestino · 16/10/2018 13:15

As a tenant I wouldn't really care about the fridge/freezer brand that much. But a Bosch washing machine would definitely impress me.
If it freezes and cools, it's cool for me. But what's more important is how the washing machine washes your clothes.
So you're massively BU.

MemoryOfSleep · 16/10/2018 13:22

She wishes for my opinion

Then maybe give her your opinion? If she wanted the opinion of a couple dozen randomers on mumsnet I feel like she'd ask us herself...

ShartGoblin · 16/10/2018 13:23

Completely not the question but I would be inclined to suggest a washer/dryer. Drying clothes is a massive pita in a flat and when I was renting I would have snapped up a place that solved that issue. Drying clothes on clothes racks in the winter causes damp which you really don't want.

Back to the question - I agree with pp that cheap washing machines are a false economy and you're better off with a quality brand that lasts if you can afford it.

RandomObject · 16/10/2018 13:27

I've never lived in a flat which had a problem with the fridge/freezer, but in my last place the washing machine broke down 3 times in a year, causing massive inconvenience. Quality washing machine, completely worth the investment.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 16/10/2018 13:30

Cheap washing machines don't tend to last all that long, maybe she's thinking on those lines. Buy cheap buy twice and all that.

PinkHeart5914 · 16/10/2018 13:33

Imo washing machine is something you don’t buy cheap end of, a fridge on the other hand buy as cheap as you like. Perfect common sense by your friend tbh

I rent out several properties and all have a good washing machine but a cheap fridge/freezer as in my experience cheap fridges last but cheap washing machines don’t!
