New washing machine - John Lewis or Appliances Direct?

I need a new washing machine, and have selected a model from John Lewis that has the features I need at a price that seems reasonable. The same model is available for £90 cheaper at Appliances Direct. Both options can do fitting and disposal of the old machine. If something goes wrong I suppose John Lewis will be better at sorting it, but I don't know that for sure. Please help me decide what to do!

Doesn't John Lewis have the slogan "never knowingly undersold"?

Call their customer service and point out the price difference. See if they are willing to match or better it.

I like John Lewis, haven't had any trouble with them (well, sort of) but I have read posters' opinions on here that suggest their customer services aren't great. Have you looked at AO (Appliances Online I think)? We've used them a lot and they've been competitive and efficient.

Nooobeee · 12/10/2018 15:31

I think they're only "never knowingly undersold" by high street competitors, not online ones.

John Lewis has a two year guarantee as opposed to the standard one year.

Almostfifty · 12/10/2018 16:04

It says, 'Never Knowingly Undersold' on the website. Try emailing them.

I've used both, and the only problem I've found is AO keep emailing me and phoned me about four times after I'd bought it to sell me extended warranty. They were most upset when I quoted the Sale of Goods Act. Grin

Try John Lewis - I bought something from them that was listed at £800. I found it online elsewhere (I'm certain it was an online retailer) for almost £200 cheaper and they matched it.

You have to pay full value up front, then contact them again with your order number and they refund you the difference.

It's worth it with JL for the extra warranty alone. We've ordered a few appliances from them and they've been great each time. I know there are some bad reviews, but aren't there for any business?

handslikecowstits · 12/10/2018 16:20

I'd buy from AP. Never had a problem with them. Had lots with JL, sadly.

wintersacomin · 12/10/2018 16:22

I'd go with JL - the one time I did they cocked up the delivery so bad got £120 bac.

autumncolour · 12/10/2018 16:24

Had dreadful experience with JL - really bad. Wouldn't go near them again.

PattiStanger · 12/10/2018 16:26

I'd normally go for the bricks and mortar store but £90 is a big difference, have you tried to get it cheaper from JL

Musseswoofles · 12/10/2018 16:26

AO will match any price. I always call them and haggle if I’m buying multiple items. They have brilliant customer service too if you have any problems or returns.

Sweetheart · 12/10/2018 16:41

I always use AO - their customer service is brilliant

HugeAckmansWife · 12/10/2018 16:44

Another vote for AO. I've ordered various things from them and it's been superb service.. Including coming and swapping an appliance that I'd ordered in the wrong size.. Next day, came out, took the wrong one away no question, difference in cost immediately credited to my card.

My last 2 washing machine purchases for John Lewis were terrible. One arrived and was found not to work, had a struggle to get it sorted as they employ staff who don't know consumer rights. Finally got it exchanged.

Last one was 'in stock' on the website so bought and paid for it, to be told it was out of stock for 2 months. I took a lot of chasing to get the money back when the order was cancelled and bought from AO. (I wouldn't buy from them again either after the last 2 experiences).

Have you tried Euronics?

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 12/10/2018 20:27

Exactly what Toad said I’m afraid. Johnny Lou Lou have been my go to, for everything, for years. No more. No,idea if it’s becuase of their recent dip in fortunes or if their recent dip,in fortunes is why they are now so bad. Recently ordered (a GBP900) dishwasher from them, got it delivered, installed and old machine taken away. Machine stoooed working a few days later. No problem I understand manufacturing errors happen. So I ‘rejected’ it. Obviously. Firstly, they tried to get me to deal with the manufacturer. Unfortunately for them I do know consumer rights. Then they tried to say that they had to clear it with the manufacturer. Nope. Finally they accepted the rejection. I was happy to have another, similar, machine from them. It wasn’t in stock and said I should buy elsewhere and they could take the faulty machine. They said they ‘couldn’t prioritise’ collection and they’d be here in two weeks. They made it clear I must not touch it or they would reject the ‘rejection’(shock), this included having it disconnected so I couldn’t even get another company to deliver and install a new one until they’d been and accepted the ‘rejection’. They wouldn’t refund my GBP900 til they had collected it so I was out of pocket for nearly three weeks in the end. The final nail in the Johnny Lou Lou coffin (and I wouldn’t buy one of those from them either) was, I paid nearly GBP50 for delivery, plumbing, removal. They fully expected to leave me without a functioning machine and keep my GBP50 because ‘I’d had the service I’d paid for’. So GBP50 out of pocket and nothing to show for it. Uh huh, no. I got it back, I wasn’t going anywhere til I did. But use them again? No.
