Costume Party Dilemma

Oh help me wise MNers with this very odd dilemma. I've name changed in case it's outing but a regular.

I am going to a costume party. It's quite a big deal and lots and lots of people I know will be there, including people I don't know well and don't feel that comfortable in front of. Some time ago I agreed to be in a 'group' costume ie four of us all dressed the same, but in my absence the other three decided on something that I am not totally comfortable wearing as it makes me feel fat and dowdy. One of the girls has also spent a lot of money on the costumes although didn't ask about it first. By the time I found out what it would look like it had been bought.

I've realised I can modify it to feel better/less ridiculous wearing it but would a bit different from the other three and possibly piss them off.

AIBU to not quite go along with the costume because I don't want to look dowdy?

WWYD?

We've been invited to a costume party where it has been made quite clear that dressing up is not optional.
Neither of us feel comfortable with dressing up, and certainly not in the chosen theme so we have declined.

I like costume parties enough, but only if I'm OK with the costume.

Some people really love them though.

How much of a big deal is this party? Can't you be ill on that day and swerve it? I would.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 08/10/2018 09:51

Does the group need all 4 for the theme to work or can they just be three and you be something else?

PlateOfBiscuits · 08/10/2018 09:51

What’s the costume? Can you talk to your friends and explain how you feel?

PinkPantherRedDog · 08/10/2018 09:51

I want to go, just not in the costume!

Everyone looks stupid at costume parties. You can lose bits of it after the first half an hour. I’d go but avoid being in any photos.

Morgan12 · 08/10/2018 09:56

Can you not tell us what the costume is?

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 08/10/2018 09:59

YANBU to want to do it, but only you can say whether or not they’ll be pissed off.

If they are I’d counter with my own pissed-offness that then went ahead and agreed and bought costumes without my input.

Do a Ginger Spice. Leave the group. Tape some cahurtiry shop action men to a hat and take an umbrella. Its raining men. You can discard the hat and umbrella at the first opportunity.

I think it’s too late to back out now. Chalk it up to experience. As long as the costume fits you’ll look fine. Take one for the team and next year plan your own fab outfit.
