To be freaked out at Google history replicating on work PC...?

Help!

Is this happening to anyone else? Searches conducted at home and even on mobile come up when you google search from a work network on a totally separate device...??

I am not interlinked by any accounts between devices, as far as I can tell.

Any advice greatly appreciated!

It's probably your Gmail account? (Or equivalent?)
It saves your searches and any device you use will have it.

Oysterbabe · 06/10/2018 15:25

You must be logged in to your Google account. Log out.

AGHHHH · 06/10/2018 15:29

You will be linked, probably by your Gmail address. The search history wouldn't replicate in any other way that I can think of.

Fiveletters · 06/10/2018 15:31

I saw this the other day! I was logged into gmail at work.

ceecee32 · 06/10/2018 15:36

This happened to me the other way around. I had to ring a care home at work - searched on google for the phone number and then had a conversation with them (with my android phone within hearing distance)
Within 30 mins I had an advert for the same company on Messenger !

Absolutely no way the 2 accounts are linked - its a goverment secure internet

anothernameagain000 · 06/10/2018 19:27

That’s how google works! The idea being hat you don’t have to save passwords etc ok every device. Don’t use chrome or log out if you’re not keen on this happening.

@ceecee - nope it’s jist retargeted marketing - when you visit the site a cookie is used which they will then use to retarget you on Facebook. It’s not voodoo - it’s advertising

ceecee32 · 06/10/2018 20:53

@anothername...... But how could I visit the site on work PC and then get the advert on my android phone. Definitely no connection between the two devices

ginandnappies · 06/10/2018 20:57

You're logged into your Gmail account on the computer.

Mrsfs · 06/10/2018 20:59

You have probably signed in to your Google account on both, it means it keeps your search history, bookmarks etc on any device.

Susiesoop · 06/10/2018 21:06

You can set up different profiles on Google to get around this, I have a "work profile' that has none of my personal search history showing, you can toggle between them by selecting the profile you want to use. Alternatively you can go incognito and no search settings are saved, like anoymous browsing but annoying if you need saved passwords etc.

myohmywhatarainyday · 06/10/2018 21:18

@ceecee32 I think it’s the microphone on your android phone.
I had it before a few times.
Was discussing colostomy bags on a work landline and then adverts started coming up on my iPhone Facebook.
I turned off the microphone access to Facebook and messenger and it never happened again.

DannyWallace · 06/10/2018 21:27

@ceecee32 this happens to me. If location services are on on your phone, Facebook messenger pics up what's been spoken and advertises based on that.
OP I'm not sure about yours though 🤨

Justanotherlurker · 06/10/2018 21:30

You have signed into chrome on both your home and work laptop.

Sign out of your work one and check your email etc on your phone instead.

TeeniefaeTroon · 06/10/2018 22:20

My workmate was messaging her daughter on her mobile about a brand of laptop bags, she then went onto the internet on a computer at work and the same brand appeared in her adverts. It wasn't even her computer 😱

ColdNeverBotheredMeAnyway · 06/10/2018 22:28

This has happened to me. I'm not allowed to sign into my Gmail or Facebook on my work computer. And I'm not allowed to sign into my work email on my home computer.

I can't think of any way they could be linked. I was talking to a friend about it, he thought I was exaggerating.... then he told me the following day the exact same thing happened to him - he had searched a random recipe at home, and it appeared in an ad on his work computer.

How does it happen?!?!!

ImNotonLinkedInNo · 06/10/2018 22:33

So were you logged in to your email at work OP?

I had a spooky experience, I did NOT google this but I sat around a table with some friends, phone on the table, discussing amongst other things getting a soda stream to make sparkling water to avoid using so many plastic bottles, then I picked up my phone, scrolled through facebook and up came an ad for soda stream. I had only just thought of getting one. Hadn't even googled!
