Hi all
I'm at a bit of a loss to know how to feel and I don't know if I'm overreacting?
On Tuesday I got a call from the school to tell me my 5 year old DD had fallen from their adventure playground, hit a wooden pole and landed awkwardly on her back, the told me she was fine but I rushed down there to go get her and on advice from the GP took her to hospital where they checked her over and said she is ok, nothing sinister and discharged us after a few hours.
I let her have the day off yesterday just have a day to rest as she is very sore and bruised. I took her in today and got her to show me the playground and where shed fallen as I'd not seen it before and was a little bit shocked to find the monkey bars she had fallen from were not the 4 feet off the ground as the school had told me ( I called and asked as the hospital needed to know) but seemed to be over 6ft, my DH is 6ft 2 and it was definitely taller than him. After talking to the other mums I found out it really scared the other children and there have been 2 other incidents where 5/6 year olds have fallen and broken their arms on this playground and the staff just told them to walk it off and if it weren't for the mothers taking the children to hospital after school they wouldn't have know so the poor kids were sitting with broken bones all day, they didn't even call the parents.
Now I'm sat here thinking back on it, they didn't give me a lot of information on her fall, they didn't tell me she had hit her head which she told us later in the hospital and we found a large lump, they didn't give me a red accident slip to take with me which by law they have to, they seemed more concerned with just getting us out the door, it all seems very careless.
Now I know accidents happen and my DD takes after me and I trip over my own shadow
and I know this was an accident as her hands just slipped off as they do so i don't blame the school for her falling but AIBU to feel that a. Children of that age shouldn't be on this playground as all of the equipment is over 6ft (I recently coheaded a campaign to raise safety awareness of the local parks and we eventually got the the council to build a toddler park so I know a bit about age related regulations) and b. That they handled the situation very poorly?
I also today asked that she be excused from P.E and the daily mile (they walk or run a few time around the playground everyday) and the teacher made it seem that it was an inconvenience to them that she would have to go sit somewhere else
This school is slowly draining my soul as there's always some new issue every week be it with my child or someone else's.
I'm just feeling a bit uneasy about it all and whilst I'm a bit peeved about how it was handled my main concern is the safety of the younger children? What should I do?
