On holiday in greece. Hotel has free wifi that you access by using a separate login and password per device. I cannot for the life of me log in and no guest / hotel staff have been able to help. I am fast running out of inclusive/free data and desperately need to keep on top of work emails. Stupidly did not bring my laptop with me.

When i find the hotel wifi network and try to log in, it is not taking me to a login (username and password) screen, as is the norm. I'm being asked to scan a QR code - a square barcode pops up - but how the hell do i scan it when it's ON my screen?! I've downloaded 3 different QR scanner apps but when the thing that needs scanning pops up you need to 'exit' away from it to open up the scanner app, and then the scanner app has nothing to scan, iyswim. I've tried photographing the QR code on another guests phone and scanning the photo, but that doesnt work. Ive tried googling but cant find anything. Absolutely tearing my hair out and no other guests have this problem - they are just asked to enter a user id and password and then they're in. None of them have to scan any barcodes. Phone is an android. Can anyone help?!

Can you take a screen shot when it comes up and then scan it with Google goggles? I think Google goggles let's you scan from a photo on the device you're using.

Apparently it was replaced with Google lens in August!! I didn't know that. It might still work!

I was going to suggest what Fifty said. Or take screenshot and somehow print it out? Maybe log your question on a techie support site? Or someone else could do that for you if you're too short of data? Could you buy a dongle? Sorry can't be more helpful.

hamandpease · 02/10/2018 09:48

Is there a log on screen that you've found before? That you could force open now?

Fiffyshadesofgreymatter · 02/10/2018 09:48

QR droid?

Firesuit · 02/10/2018 09:48

A pure guess at what might work, but ask hotel reception to print the QR code so you can scan it. (I assume it's on a web page, if not you can copy it into an email and email it to them to print.)

Firesuit · 02/10/2018 09:57

Apparently the screen print idea is how it's done.

Kind people of MN thank you all so much for your advice. None of those ideas worked / were applicable but i went back to reception to see if they could show me the router / print the code and a different receptionist knew what to do - apparently all you had to do is go to "google.gr" and then the phone understands it is abroad - no idea what wizardry she did but it took me to the wifi login page and im in!!! Thank you all so much
