To ask you to tell me how to tear a family apart?

By telling me what board game is the most irritating, rage inducing one you can think of?

My SIL and her boyfriend are the most competitive people I know, and we always play game night with them and it ends in rage (this is LIGHT HEARTED, yes this is all there is to it, no massive back story or counselling needed Grin)

For a gift we want to get them a really bloody frustrating game because we're going to swot up on it first to kick their arses. Yes it's petty and no we don't care Grin

So pleeeeaaaase tell me.. what games make your family go crazy?

Yet another for Monopoly.

It was known as a Blood Sport in our household.

My wife banned me from getting out one of my many sets about 20 years ago.

I'm not brave enough to ask if I have served my sentence yet.

ArtemisWeatherwax · 01/10/2018 18:37

CIty Monopoly - I threw it in the bin, with gusto. Mainly because it's utter shite and the rules are crap.

WoofWoofMooWoof · 01/10/2018 18:43

Frustration, obviously Grin.

MulticolourMophead · 01/10/2018 18:46

Pictionary - well I've only played that once, but I got banned from playing again, as we were in couples and ex and I turned out to be very good without having to cheat.

Cards against humanity is one that the DC and I are contemplating getting.

Middersweekly · 01/10/2018 18:47

Definitely Monopoly as someone always cheats and scams their way through and robs everyone else.
Also...Cards against humanity because it’s so totally offensive!

RomanyRoots · 01/10/2018 18:47

Trivial Pursuit, monopoly is annoying for the length and it's just luck.
Trivial Pursuit players who are competitive are just the best Grin

Trust me, Coppit:

averylongtimeago · 01/10/2018 18:50

Monopoly.
We haven't played monopoly since the Great Monopoly Disaster of 1995

PhilomenaButterfly · 01/10/2018 18:51

Monopoly. 25 year feuds have started over it.

QueenOfCatan · 01/10/2018 18:56

Catan and carcassonne are brilliant for scuppering others. Carcassonne is a bit more tame, catan is great as you can gang up on people, block their routes, beat them to longest road, robber them repeatedly, etc.

Union pacific is also great for pissing people off. Let them build a massive train line and then jump in on their success by getting shares. Brilliant fun!

Dominion with the alchemy expansion (iirc) which has a witch, brilliant one to use on everybody else. Lots of card combos to bug others and just be a pest if you want to be (usually my tactic once I realise I'm not winning a game because its fun Grin )

WoofWoofMooWoof · 01/10/2018 18:56

If you want something not frustrating - have you ever played MAD? I used to love MAD - I miss it. Might have a browse on ebay.

PinguDance · 01/10/2018 18:57

Another person who’s banned from Monopoly- it’s not even a funny anecdote, people occasionally bring it up and it’s awkward and we change the subject- it’s that bad

alwaysanauntie · 01/10/2018 18:57

Apart from the fact that you can't guarantee a win, surely it's got to be Cards Against Humanity?!

KarrisWhiteOak · 01/10/2018 19:00

If no ones said it the house on haunted hill. Or something it’s fab.

ThanosSavedMe · 01/10/2018 19:03

Another vote for really nasty horse racing.

Carrom has been known to cause fall out in our household and I’ve heard the Mr and Mrs can create mayhem. I’m not actually allowed to buy it!

PinguDance · 01/10/2018 19:04

Settlers of catan defo brings out a whinging frustration rather than the pure, clear rage of monopoly. Depends what your going for... I also love dobble, like I actually enjoy it but if you’re losing it’s insanely frustrating

PinguDance · 01/10/2018 19:07

Oh fucking Yahtzee! Drives me mad!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 01/10/2018 19:07

I was going to suggest Cards Against Humanity too - but I see that is out.

It’s not a board game, but how about a really fiendish jigsaw - from which you have removed just one piece.

I am clearly very stupid - last Christmas I thought it would be a good idea for all five of us (me, dh, and the three dses - 21, 23 and 25) to play Monopoly. It was not a good idea - what made me think it would be? Too much damson gin liqueur?

iMombie · 01/10/2018 19:09

The Game of Thrones board game. I'm not even into the books/series but the game has caused massive tantrums in my family whilst and after playing it. You can form alliances and then totally screw people over. It's quite long set up but it's really good if you want to team up and destroy others.

Sammilouwho · 01/10/2018 19:13

I remember playing 'timeline' one year with my in laws, what I didn't notice at the time was I had mirrored placemats down and it got particularly heated as to how my sister in law knew all the answers (this was brand new, we had literally pulled it out of the box there and then) turns out sil had been using the placemats to look at the answers... Ingenious!
Mysterium is good because one person can't talk for the whole game so they get more and more frustrated!

WeirdCatLady · 01/10/2018 19:14

Oh Christ yes, monopoly. We took it on holiday once and started a game the first night. I very quickly lost and then spent the following two weeks.....yes....two fucking weeks...having to watch several hours play each day between dh and dd who was 8 at the time. It was brutal. Neither one would give in and at the end of the two weeks I apparently ruined it all by just packing it all away. Never again.

BlueJava · 01/10/2018 19:15

Trivial Pursuit - because you could swot up on all the questions and answers first!

FreiasBathtub · 01/10/2018 19:17

City of Horror. It is amazing. You can't win without a certain amount of cooperation but at some point you have to turn round and betray your fellow players to the zombie hordes. I love it.

Space Alert is hilarious and intensely frustrating but totally cooperative so more an opportunity for endless post-game picking over and recrimination than actual in-game backstabbing.

I, too, have a game of Monopoly played with friends that We Do Not Speak Of. And my DH and I once nearly broke up over a game of Trivial Pursuit (1980s edition). Neither of us are what you'd call a good winner. We're currently expecting our second kid, a major reason for doing so is having a fourth for Mahjong. We should probably start saving for their therapy.

Harleypuppy · 01/10/2018 19:18

Frustration as you can be an arse and move other players. You and your dh could only move the most competitive one backwards. We can't play this game as it always ends in tears.

MixedMaritalArts · 01/10/2018 19:19

For an extra evil twist make your own ‘my monopoly’ it can be thing of beauty/horror.
