To be annoyed that someone's put their rubbish in our bin?

Our bins get emptied once a fortnight as the council is trying to get people to recycle. dh put the bin out this morning half-full (we've been recycling for years & use cloth nappies on dd3 & ds so the bin's usually only 1/2 to 3/4 full). dh came home for lunch & checked to see if it had been emptied & some sod's gone & filled it to the brim with black bags. The lid's barely closing & the bin-men won't empty bins if the lid won't close since one flipped open in the machine & knocked out some poor bin man's teeth. So because some lazy sod of a neighbour can't be bothered to recycle their rubbish our bin might not get emptied. Also the council are still making noises about chipping our bins so you pay according to the weight of your rubbish so we might wind up paying more as well. I just hope dh doesn't catch whoever's doing it!

But please can someone tell me how big the bins are? Sorry to go on but I really would like to know. How many black bags fit. We're supposed to be heading that way soon.

Once they start with fortnightly collections they should be issuing wheelie bins, Ormirian - a whole website about them here!

There are different sizes though - our council is trialling a set of 3 bins, for waste/recycling/garden, and they are all smaller than the giant green things (which hold 3-4 black bags apparently).

Thankyou wendy [smile}

Should be OK then.

elesbells · 12/06/2007 13:04

i hope you dont live in my street greebos...it might be me!! and its 4 average size black bags that will fit in a bin!!

Eleusis · 12/06/2007 13:07

Our council is using the 240 ones. We have one now and more than fill it each week. I think we are going to have overflow. I'm not sure what I'm going to do about it. I am certainlly not paying a financial penalty. I but if I dump it on a council estate they'll come pick it up for free. Now, where is there a council estate???

Peachy · 12/06/2007 13:08

ormirian you should be OK- we can manage with 5, ojne of who is in those big older child disposable nappies

Eleusis · 12/06/2007 13:10

BTW, I know I'm being a bit of a cynic. I am all for recycling, I just don't trust that the council is.

And our bin men are quite reasonable about taking an extra bag or two so perhaps they'll continue. Or perhaps I'll need to pay off the bin men? Wouldn't that make a nice story on the BBC. "West London Families paying off the bin men to take more rubbish"

OrmIrian · 12/06/2007 13:11

Good! Thanks Peachy.

I think we must have the best council in regards to rubbish! We have a bigger bin than everyone in our street because there are 5 adults and 2 children, both of who had nappies when the bins were introduced, my employers told the council, they sent new bin. We recycle alot, usually about 5 or 6 bin bags worth in 2 weeks, but still fill the big bin in 2 weeks (about 4/5 bin bags and not so the lid doesnt close, though if it didnt the bin men would still take it!!) But now while its summer may-septmeber, they take bin collections back to weekly. they also do this over christmas, so our bin is about half full.

bookwormmum · 12/06/2007 13:39

I've seen dustmen lobbing bags full of recyclable materials in the back of the dustcart - I was stuck behind it and followed most of the way down a route in Havering (a London Borough). I know it was recyclables as I recognised the sacks - I used to work in an office there. I know some people dump rubbish in the recycling bags but you can't tell me a whole collection route had misused their sacks. The dustmen were being lazy or had instructions from elsewhere to do that.

sarz · 12/06/2007 13:45

Fio, please tell us what you did!!

Peachy · 12/06/2007 15:16

Go on Fio!!

( I am a bit narked about these things atm anyway,a s I posted below ,my neighbour perfectly able to attempt to kick down fences etc but has just been awarded a blue badge whereas we get none- grrrrr)

What did ya do?

Mindles · 12/06/2007 15:18

Yes what happened in the car park? People saying they won't or can't tell you something drives me mad, I'm so nosy I will spend hours imagining what it might have been.

flibbertyjibbet · 12/06/2007 15:36

My mum has this problem too and they live in an area where bins are still collected weekly. One neighbour waits till bin day and when everyone's bins are out she goes round putting her extra rubbish in everyone elses. They are supposed to be going over to fortnightly collections soon - I am sure she will be lynched!
We have fortnightly collections, wash nappies for 2 kids and recycle everything, our bin is usually 3/4 full but sometimes someone puts an extra bag in there which makes me MAD.
Can you buy any kind of locking device for a wheelie bin?

coppertop · 12/06/2007 15:44

Come on back and tell us, Fio.

Maybe she'll think twice before being so rude and impatient again. Grrrrrr!

I can imagine your dh sitting in the car with his hands over his face while muttering "Here we go again....." repeatedly.

Eleusis · 12/06/2007 15:51

Go Fio!

OrmIrian · 12/06/2007 15:51

No they don't >

But actually she did deserve it fio . And being so meek and mild that I make myself sick, I wouldn't have the guts.

Eleusis · 12/06/2007 15:52

Peachy · 12/06/2007 16:00
