The NHS is being sued for failing to offer fertility treatment to all transgender patients

I honestly think offering fertility treatment for anybody full stop on the NHS is mental. There are drugs for cancer and alzheimers that the NHS can't afford to provide. Surely life saving / life prolonging treatment should take priority?

Cindersdonegood · 27/09/2018 22:19

As much as I would like to agree @Haahhpy I simply cannot imagine the pain and torment of infertility. I have three kids and it feels like my heart is being ripped out when I think I cannot have any more (DH says no). If I feel so awful knowing I can't have another, it must be soul destroying to not even get one. That's why I think it should be funded. For those who can't have children via the old fashioned way or insemination. I don't think they should fund those who opt to make it impossible to have children but want the NHS make it happen when they demand it. That should be self funded.

It’s getting ridiculous. Parts of gravy campaign for equality for trans people is alienating them further.

Whereisthecoffee · 28/09/2018 06:09

The* not gravy I really should proof read.

Aridane · 28/09/2018 06:15

So basically the EHRC (equal to and human rights commission) has said that the NHS should offer egg and sperm extraction to transgender people before they transgender

Aridane · 28/09/2018 06:16

(sorry, before they transition)

YeTalkShiteHen · 28/09/2018 06:18

Surely life saving / life prolonging treatment should take priority?

Absolutely agree, in every case life saving/prolonging treatment should be prioritised, not just this one.

Much like the whinging about mastectomies for trans men being pushed down the list because women with breast cancer are being prioritised.

Batshit, absolutely batshit.

MaverickSnoopy · 28/09/2018 06:42

I could be wrong here but I thought it was a bit of a postcode lottery in the first place as to whether men and women were entitled?

jay55 · 28/09/2018 07:00

So people who are choosing to make themselves infertile should be offered fertility treatment for free?
Rather than counselling to understand the full implications of their choices, or being made to wait like the rest of us who can't be sterilised on the nhs unless we meet family size, age etc criteria.

OwlinaTree · 28/09/2018 07:07

Fertility treatment should be funded at some level for those that need it. The reproductive system is not working as it should and IVF is a solution to that.

I don't know about what I think about offering it to transgender people. Are female couples offered IVF on the NHS? Does it have to be a couple, one of each sex?

Aridane · 28/09/2018 09:21

But I don't think this is about offering a full fertility service - just about extracting and storing eggs and sperm so the option is preserved

frasersmummy · 28/09/2018 09:31

Right so let me get this straight ..transgender means you are a woman trappped in a man's body or vice versa. You hate your body you think it's all wrong ..you must change it ..
But you don't want to give up.tne part that will give you a family..sorry but that's part of your body ..either change it or don't ..you can't have it both ways
The world has gone mad

HowlsMovingBungalow · 28/09/2018 09:34

Would you say the same about same sex couples @frasersmummy ?
