Dd who is 13 thinks this is a brilliant song. "So catchy" apparently. So AIBU to think it's lyrics are disgraceful and not suitable for a 13 year old and not really something anybody with respect for women would listen too?

Dd thinks I am too middle aged and I need to lighten up. Hmm

Is this really what is considered good music?

I prepared to be educated if it's about something else. hopefully clicky link here

I personally cant get worked up over things like this.

It's a song.

Hip hop is provocative and controversial. If you don't think it's appropriate for your child to listen to, then it is up to you to monitor that - the same way you presumably monitor video games/movies, etc.

Lethaldrizzle · 27/09/2018 14:25

Kanye west is a dick and any song that uses pejorative female terms is not something I particularly want my kids listening to, male or female.

Haahhpy · 27/09/2018 14:30

I don't think YABU, the song is disgusting and you're right to tell your daughter so. Not finding it acceptable to call women a fucking ho is nothing to do with being middle aged!

Usuallytootiredbuthappyanyway · 27/09/2018 14:40

I think it's hideous, I only came to know the song when it was reported to me that a child was singing this in one of my colleague's lessons. I am certain that the majority of parents from that class would not allow their child to listen to a song like that yet they are now all exposed because one did. Listen to the radio version along with the original lyrics it is quite hilarious how much it had to be changed!

ParanoidGynodroid · 27/09/2018 14:42

Debauched, misogynistic and gross.
I really hate this "if you don't like it you don't have to watch/let your children watch" crap; by that logic, literally anything goes or can be allowed.
Offensive material being aimed at the young has an effect on them. They may copy the language and/or aspire to the behaviour contained.

MyHusbandSaysIHave1000MNNames · 27/09/2018 14:43

I don't think Kanye's music has ever really been considered good by anyone other than Kanye and probably his wife too.

TenForward82 · 27/09/2018 14:43

Ugh.

Stressedoverkids · 27/09/2018 14:45

I think it is very difficult to police Music much easier with films etc.

At the minute Dd just wants to be the opposite of her boring middle aged parents. Yesterday's complaint being that we are too law abiding! Hmm

Usuallytootiredbuthappyanyway yes apparently lots of them singing this in class. Shock

Sometimes I despair that whatever the home influence it's never going to counteract social media especially when parents are dismissed with a "get out of the last century " attitude. Angry

What's so young and hip about misogyny?! Completely baffled by the age argument. Surely the young are supposed to the future of feminism!! Very depressing that they listen to music with such degrading lyrics just to appear current or cool. It's dangerous and backwards that songs like this are considered an acceptable part of modern media.

MrsJayy · 27/09/2018 15:58

Yanbu but what can you possibly know you are clearly just an old duffer or something, although when blurred lines came out Ithought it was quite catchy took me a few listens to realise

AnnabelTheAntelope · 27/09/2018 15:58

At the minute Dd just wants to be the opposite of her boring middle aged parents

Time to develop a penchant for hip hop and law breaking!

I haven’t heard the song and really don’t want to. I don’t like Kanye at all.

MrsJayy · 27/09/2018 16:00

Keep being middle aged keep at her the message will hopefully sink in at 13 fitting in seems more important than principals sadly.

RhythmStix · 27/09/2018 16:05

No YANBU at all - horrible and gross. What people see in the deluded racist misogynist egomaniac Kanye West is beyond me.

NarcolepticOuchMouse · 27/09/2018 16:46

You could try explaining why the song is problematic but I'm not sure if that will be lost on a 13 year old? You could educate them about how women are treated generally and that this song glamourises repulsive and harmful behaviour. But again, maybe lost on a 13 year old?
