To self medicate

Got a niggle in my gum around tooth the middle of last week, it got worse and by Friday afternoon was throbbing (my dentist is miles away from work and he doesn’t do full days so wouldn’t have been able to get in until Monday).

Was thinking some sort of infection. I had an unopened pack of amoxicillin 500mg. I have been taking it since Saturday morning, WIBU? Also AIBU to leave it a few more days to see if antibiotics kick in before going to see dentist who would have most likely prescribed antibiotics anyway?

I would just advise work that you need to go to the dentist, if you don’t and you self medicate and it does nothing you could potentially be letting this tooth issue get worse.

When you say niggle - is there bleeding of the gums, so you grind your teeth ?

It might not actually be an infection it could be a inflamed gym from having food stuck.

It needs to be the right type of antibiotic for the infection (if it is an infection).

Get thee to the dentist!

Found this which basically says you shouldn’t be taking antibiotics

In dentistry antibiotics should only be prescribed when there is systemic involvement in the presenting condition i.e.

• Lymphadenopathy
• Pyrexia
• Threat to the airway
• General malaise and feeling unwell

Define general malaise. 😄 that’s most days.

I took them as I’ve had many a gum/tooth infection and the dentist has always given antibiotics.

Ok will phone dentist in the morning, have warned work who have said they desperately need me in, I was like yep I get that but if I leave it and it gets worse then we’re buggered.

Nice to be needed I guess.
