To ask about council housing

Posting for traffic, sorry.

Does anybody know the process after a receiving an offer for a property? My council rang me yesterday to say a letter has been sent out with an offer.

How long will it take to get the keys etc?

I guess it depends if it is ready to rent straight away or work needs doing

My first house took around 9 weeks before i got keys. Im due to move again soon and was offered the property 3 months ago and still not had keys due to ongoing work. It varies massively depending on what work needs done and what state previous tennant left it in.

Congrats! It will depend if the property is ready or not, if someone’s moving out and anything needs doing to it, or if it’s currently empty. Ask them.

Congratulations!

We were given the keys within about ten days I think, there is a very quick turnaround here and we had to start paying rent pretty much immediately on accepting the offer. However the property had been vacated already and had a bit of work done, I have no idea if that’s normal.

We got the offer by phone, went to see the council a couple of days later (and went to have a sneaky look at the outside of the house), had an official viewing in which we accepted the property - it’s a choice based bidding system here so we did have the option to turn one down - and then it was all go very quickly.

We didn’t move in for a month though, we had to still pay our notice period at the private rented house anyway so we took our time moving in and building furniture etc which made life a bit easier. The HA didn’t care as long as rent was paid.

I think it all depends on what work needs to be done. Mine was about 3 weeks from what I remember betweeen viewing and accepting to getting the keys, because they had to do some replastering.

I declared as homeless as just had my DD and older brothers moved back home and was not a good mix Confused so I was put in Temporary accommodation been here for 3 weeks
