Bought trousers in my usual size but from ebay. Buy this size all the time from dorothy perkins so was pretty confident of fit.
They've arrived and have a very old label on. Old branding of dp. They are much smaller than expected.
I know, vanity sizing....
I queried with the seller and apparently petite means smaller.
Er no. Angry

In trousers I would take petite to mean shorter.

minisoksmakehardwork · 20/09/2018 17:27

Petite is generally shorter legs and a narrower cut, so narrower shoulders, shorter body etc.

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 20/09/2018 17:27

I’d take it to mean shorter and narrower

BackBoiler · 20/09/2018 17:27

Its shorter. A size 14 trousers in petite is the same width but has shorter legs they dont have to keep taking up the legs

GorgonLondon · 20/09/2018 17:27

Petite means shorter and smaller frame. But vanity sizing is out of control so it's probably because they're old

Singlebutmarried · 20/09/2018 17:28

Petite are shorter in leg length but also in depth of crotch I’ve found.

minisoksmakehardwork · 20/09/2018 17:28

Otherwise they would just be marked as short eg 14S. Petite would be smaller at the hip measurement and possibly the amount of fabric round the legs. Your seller is correct.

RabbityMcRabbit · 20/09/2018 17:28

Petite is French for "small" if that clarifies things...

TeaAndNoSympathy · 20/09/2018 17:28

That’s exactly what petite means. Confused Shorter in length and narrower in cut.

MarcieBluebell · 20/09/2018 17:30

Smaller in legs and torso

WellTidy · 20/09/2018 17:31

In trousers, I would take petite to mean shorter from crotch to hem and shorter from crotch to waist.

In tops, smaller armholes and neckline, narrower shoulders, shorter length, shorter sleeves.

Andylion · 20/09/2018 17:34

Yes, that's is what the word "petite" means in French.

However, in clothing sizes it generally means shorter and in smaller proportion so, although I am short, (a size 16 in UK sizing) I am not small. I buy lots of petite clothes that fit my short-but-not-small body.

MelonBuffet · 20/09/2018 17:36

Petite is smaller not just shorter. For example a jacket would have shorter arms but also a higher waist and be generally tailored to fit a smaller person, not just a short length.

Tbh if there are, for example, regular size 10 trousers and petite size 10 trousers I’d expect the petite to be shorter but also shorter in the crotch and potentially smaller around the thighs etc. while being a similar size round the waist

slowco4ch · 20/09/2018 17:37

Petite range clothes are usually cut to smaller proportions so no, not just shorter. The hip/crotch/leg will have different ratios. Blouses will have the darts in different places.

ToadOfSadness · 20/09/2018 17:37

Petite is smaller. However if measurements are not given and it is something I want to buy I ask for actual measurements because even something that looks like one I already have can be different, made to a slightly different pattern, a different style no. etc.

Have been sent petite in the past when not listed as petite and it has been very small compared to the regular size. Narrower, skimpier and shorter. It seems as if random labels are sewn in sometimes when they run out of the correct ones.

Celestia26 · 20/09/2018 17:38

I sell clothing, and whenever I sell the same item in Regular and Petite, the only difference in sizing is the length of the item is shorter. The bust and waist sizing stays the same.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 20/09/2018 17:39

Short people aren’t necessarily petite.

thedevilinablackdress · 20/09/2018 17:39

Not sure about the ins and outs of petite sizing, but if they're older then the sizes are different to today's.

Notquiteagandt · 20/09/2018 17:43

Petite clothes tend to be narrower on hips shoulders and waist. Shorter legs and arms. Narrower neck and arm holes.

The proportions are generally smaller.

Its a while since my fashion school days but from memory there about 20 differant measurements that differ for petite clothing.

See this on the wallis website when i googled definition of petite this was 1st thing that came up.

Says things are reduced in proportion.

Ironically, tall fittings seem to think 'a bit higher up' rather than 'scaled up'.

So yes, the length of the leg is fine, but manufacturers haven't taken into account the fact that my body is longer than somebody who is 5'4" and therefore the zip is somewhere around my lower pubis...

Racoon100 · 20/09/2018 17:48

Petite is smaller, not just shorter. I’m short, but there’s no way I’d describe myself as petite.

CocktailQueenie · 20/09/2018 17:49

I always thought this too but ordered some jeggings from Next, both same size but one pair regular and one petite. Petite pair tiny bit shorter but much smaller. Thought it may have been a fault, so returned and ordered same again. Exactly the same fit, regular size jeggings were bigger all over but petite jeggings were a little shorter and smaller all over. I asked the assistant and she told me that petite meant shorter and smaller!

SnuggyBuggy · 20/09/2018 17:50

I'm short and fat arsed so I'm never sure if I'm petite

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 20/09/2018 17:52

You’re not, Snuggy

SnuggyBuggy · 20/09/2018 17:54

Oh well Cake
