They are puppets from many people’s childhoods watching Sesame Street. Apparently there has always been speculation about their relationship.
Who cares or thinks about this stuff? They are Bert and Ernie, just that!

Now, they've been caught up in the gay cake row. I'm all for the cake, but IMO Bert & Ernie don't belong on it.
