A very old book I read as a child?
I have been fascinated by others who have found things on here when some very kind people helped them with where to look.

I remember this thick, heavy, A4 sized book, with a dark green hardback cover. It was (or seemed) in my young mind to be very old. I read it in 1995/96ish, and it would have been bought maybe 10+ years before that, perhaps? Or maybe even older.

I think the title had the word ‘Children’s’ in it, maybe Children’s stories, or Children’s bedtime stories.
The front cover was very busy, lots of pictures, maybe a forest?

In it was loads of Aesop’s fables type stories, but that’s not what the title was. There was a story about the 3 little wolves and the big bad pig, I remember that. And the crow dropping stones into the jar to raise the water up so he could drink, those types of stories.

I would love to find this book, as I loved reading it as a child.

Also, I have other books I would love to find. They were thick and small, one orange and one green. It had 365 on the front, it was a story per day type book. I can’t remember the title of these apart from the number 365.

Any help is much appreciated! Thank you.

Hi, I remember buying my dcs lots of big books of children's stories in the mid 90s from those book clubs leaflets - where you got a lot of books free and then had to buy one a month or something.

Not much help, Sorry! Have you tried eBay for the 365 books or Google images?

wowfudge · 18/09/2018 23:07

Jeez I feel ancient that you described a book from the 1980s as very old!

AtSea1979 · 18/09/2018 23:10

Roald Dahl has a book out that is like this. It has twisted fairytale stories. Not sure what it’s called.

newnamechange1234 · 19/09/2018 16:14

Sorry, didn’t mean to offend with saying it was very oldBlush I just meant it had old well worn pages and an ‘old book’ smell.

Yes I’ve tried google images with no luck. Maybe if I went into a bookshop they might be able to help. Thanks all.

I don’t think it was written by Ronald Dahl,
It was a different style of writing. Thank you.

Might be worth just googling lines from the book

Softpebbles · 19/09/2018 16:18

Have you googled 365 bedtime stories. Quite a few images come up.

ShowerGel9 · 19/09/2018 16:20

No idea. There would have been loads of books like that. I love that you are trying to find it tho Smile

BanginHeadache · 19/09/2018 16:28

Could it be The Big Book of Fables?

BanginHeadache · 19/09/2018 16:29

This maybe? (If pic has worked?

Jammiebammie · 19/09/2018 16:33

Could it be Deans gift book of fairy tales?

Contents: Little Red Riding Hood, Mother Goose, Hop O' My Thumb, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, The Three Little Pigs, Rumpelstiltskin, Jack and the Beanstalk, The Frog Prince, The Princess and the Pea, The White Cat, Little Ida's Flowers, Ole Luckoie or the Dustman, Thumbelina, The Top and the Ball, The Darning Needle, Blockhead Hans, Sleeping Beauty, Puss in the Boots, Tom Thumb, Hansel and Gretel, and Babes in the Wood.

I wonder if you mean Arthur Mee's Children's Encyclopedia? It came in several volumes from 1908 to the early 60s I think. One volume certainly had stories in it. The edition I have has dark green embossed covers. It's packed away so I can't check it for you, but there are lots of sets floating around.

Jammiebammie · 19/09/2018 16:36

Or this Hans Christian Anderson one?

@Jammiebammie

That’s the closest so far to what I remember in my head, it might just be it!!!!
Off to google it a bit more.

None of the pics of the 365 books are right. I remember buying it with my pocket money from Dunnes Stores in Northers Ireland, probably around 1997/98. It was approx 15cm square and one orange and one green. It was a set to collect. It was paper back.

Oh I hope it is. Deans gift books were collectible, they had a few - the orange one was nursery rhymes.

Just remembered now too, the stories were all about animals, so not sure if that Deans one it correct after all? The cover is very similar but not sure it’s the same stories! Thank you.

Not sure if it’s the encyclopaedia ones, do they have drawings on the covers?

Been speaking to a family member, they think it was actually my Grannies book, so possibly even older than I think!

There is a red version about nursery rhymes and then my green version.

The red version might be at my parents house, I’ll find out tomorrow maybe. If I can get the red one I might be able to text down the green one!🤞🏼
