Of my driving test tomorrow.

I have my first driving test in the morning and I'm petrified.

Does anybody have any advice or words of wisdom to keep me calm?

You can do it!

bilbodog · 18/09/2018 17:35

Breathe.......

Pinkandproud · 18/09/2018 17:36

Check your mirrors before you do absolutely anything and you should be ok!

weelis02 · 18/09/2018 17:36

YANBU! I was so nervous for mine too, 4 years ago now but can still remember it. You'll be fine, just think of it as another driving lesson rather than a test. I done that and it helped me. I bet you'll do great. Let us know how you get on! X

Miranda15110 · 18/09/2018 17:40

Look, it's going to go one of two ways. You can only do your best so maybe chill a little and take it in your stride with a plan to resit asap if it doesn't go your way. Good luck x

Governoress86 · 18/09/2018 17:40

I keep telling myself it is just another lesson.

I'm so nervous it's unreal , my instructor has said he is sure I will pass unless my nerves gets the better of me.

I only recently passed and was convinced the whole way round that is failed almost immediately. I shook pretty much the whole time Blush I found a free hypnotherapy app to listen to the night before, and took my instructors advice to have a banana beforehand. Also took a good glug of rescue remedy in the loo before being called in! I was so convinced I’d already failed that I chatted to the examiner the whole way round to try to cut the tension. I think that helped a little. I passed with three minors. Good luck

slashlover · 18/09/2018 17:44

Take a bottle of water with you and when they ask you to stop, you can ask to have a little drink if you need to, my mouth was so dry. Use your mirrors and look everywhere before doing anything.

Take your time. It's far better to do your manoeuvre slowly and get it right. I failed because, although my bay parking was great, I drove into the space too quickly.

Haggishaggispudding · 18/09/2018 17:44

It’s ok if you fail. Seriously.

BasicUsername · 18/09/2018 17:44

A little tip: Make sure you check the angles of all your mirrors when you get in the car. Make sure they see you do it. When you look in your mirrors, tilt your head a little (as opposed to just moving your eyes), so it's obvious what you are doing. It just makes it clearer for them to note that you are checking properly.

There is no bad outcome of a driving test. Either you pass, or it's good practice for next time. Good luck!

MarthaArthur · 18/09/2018 17:45

Are you able to get to the shops tonight? Get bachs rescue remedy and bananas for breakfast tomorrow they really help and get a good nights sleep. And remember you can always retake the test. Good luck

IfIWasABirdIdFlyIn2ACeilingFan · 18/09/2018 17:46

Being petrified will not make the test easier, it will make it harder. Tonight do some brain rewriting some breathing techniques, some positive imagining, (imagine yourself relaxed while driving, imagine yourself following all the instructions with ease, imagine yourself receiving your pass certificate with a smile- keep doing these, maybe while in the bath- or somewhere very relaxing) and keep repeating to yourself that fear will hinder you, not help you.

And if that all fails, my uncle (driving instructor) told me that one of his students needed the loo before her test, opened the toilet door and exposed a man having a poo to a waiting room full of nervous students. She passed her test. So find a pooing man Grin

MarthaArthur · 18/09/2018 17:46

Oh yes and greatly exagerate moving your head to check the mirrors.

MarthaArthur · 18/09/2018 17:47

I failed 6 times and finally passed if that helps at all :D

IfIWasABirdIdFlyIn2ACeilingFan · 18/09/2018 17:48

It’s ok if you fail. Seriously.

Yes! THIS^^

There is no limit on how many times you can take your test.

Duchessgummybuns · 18/09/2018 17:49

Seconding rescue remedy!

IlPorcupinoNilSodomyEst · 18/09/2018 17:49

Yes, offset your mirrors slightly do you have to move your head really obviously to look in them. And positive visualisation. Good luck!

CassieStuart · 18/09/2018 17:52

Remember your instructor wouldn't put you forward for the test if they didn't think you were ready. There will be absolutely nothing on the test you haven't practiced a million times already.... and yes check your mirrors.
Good luck, take a deep breath and do it.

Aprilshowersnowastorm · 18/09/2018 17:52

2 paracetamol to keep your temp down if you get stressed and a Mars for energy!!
Good luck. Totally life changing.
If at first you don't succeed....
Took me quite a few trys tbh!! Blush

Iamclearlyamug · 18/09/2018 17:54

don't worry, I was so nervous I hit the curb on the way OUT of the test centre and spent the whole test thinking 'this is going really well, shame I've already failed' and I passed anyway! don't think the examiner thought it was very amusing when I asked if she was taking the piss 😂😂🙈🙈

Iamclearlyamug · 18/09/2018 17:56

when I say hit the curb, I mean absolutely belted it, the front wheel went up on the pavement 😂😂

MumW · 18/09/2018 18:06

Try rescue remedy?
When you sit in the car, put your seat belt on and then take a few deep breaths to compose yourself.

I nearly went down a one way street at the start of mine. I said whoops, can't go down there and just reversed back a bit and went the correct way. I thought bugger, I've blown it and I think I probably relaxed a bit. Then a dog ran out in front of me so I had to do a sort of emergency stop so I thought no way I'll pass now. But guess what, I did and I think that I'd shown that I wasn't fazed when things weren't straight forward.

Your instructor thinks you'll be fine and, at the end of the day, if you fail first time, it's no big deal, chalk it up as experience.

Good Luck.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 18/09/2018 18:12

I'm not going to tell you not to be nervous.
You wouldn't be normal If you weren't.
I was throwing up and running to the toilet before mine.

I kept saying to myself Spider it's only a bloody driving test. What's the wOrse that's going to happen you'll fail. It didn't elevate my nerves though
Good luck

ChipsAndKetchup · 18/09/2018 20:08

If you fail it's just more experience that you have. Just take it again. It happens!

Governoress86 · 18/09/2018 22:04

Thanks everyone!

I'm gonna have a chill out night and get a good night's sleep and hopefully won't do too badly.

My partner thinks I will pass I just need to believe in myself that I can do this.

Will let you all know tomorrow .

Fingers crossed
