Hi all,

Sorry if this is the wrong place:

My little sister is expecting her first child and if it is a girl wants to call her “Sian”.

She sent it to me in a text and I replied “What - like See-Ann?” And she told me I was being daft.

So how would you pronounce such a name?

It’s a Welsh name. Are you Welsh?

southnownorth · 18/09/2018 15:46

sharn

Notss · 18/09/2018 15:46

Oh, I’m aware now that it a transitional welsh name, and how it is pronounced; just wondered if I was daft at the time not to twig?

Sharn.
I’m surprised you haven’t heard of it.

SoupDragon · 18/09/2018 15:46

Are you Welsh?

As she thought it was See-Ann, I’m going to guess not.

Notss · 18/09/2018 15:46

That was a massive cross post! Haha. No our family has no welsh blood at all; and neither does her partner.

Sigh - Anne

My friends name is the same and she calls herself with the pronunciation above

tinytemper66 · 18/09/2018 15:47

Sh Ann or Shaan The focus is on the a(why can't I think of the real word I want to use?)

MissionItsPossible · 18/09/2018 15:47

I know someone whose name is Sian and she pronounces it sigh-Ann. But normally it’s ‘sharn’

Ohyesiam · 18/09/2018 15:47

Sharn, but if you haven’t come across it before, you’re not being silly.

FaithInfinity · 18/09/2018 15:47

Well Siân is Welsh and is pronounced Sharn. However I have recently met an English ‘Sian’ who is See-an.

MorrisZapp · 18/09/2018 15:48

Shan if you're Scottish

Sharn if you put random Rs in words

tinytemper66 · 18/09/2018 15:48

It is my name but I do not say it with the r at all. It isn't said as Sharn. I am also Welsh 😊
